1 Samuel 13:8-10
He waited seven days, the time set by Samuel; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and Saul’s men began to scatter.   So he said, “Bring me the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings.” And Saul offered up the burnt offering.  Just as he finished making the offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to greet him.
New International Version (NIV)
“Punctuality is next to godliness . . .”  Or so Saul thought as he waited for Samuel to arrive.  Israel faced a great battle with the Philistine army.  Saul was ready to go, but Samuel had not arrived.   Saul was like the man who confided in his friend, “I am in a hurry and God is not.”  You may know the feeling?!

Impulsively, Saul took matters into his own hands and started without Samuel, making the offerings.  Just as he finished Samuel arrived asking, “What have you done?”

Looking back at my own life, I have almost always regretted the things I rushed.   One of the hardest things we have to do is to wait for God’s direction and timing.  The more important the decision, the more anxious I become, the more likely I am to act impulsively and regret what I did.

We might do better to ask, “What is making me anxious and why?”  When we answer those questions we can bring them into the presence of God and seek his guidance.  Of this we may be sure, our God is not late, nor is he early.  He is always right on time.  So we can trust him today and every day.
 Pray with me:
Father, show me the things which hurry our hearts today.  Search us God and know our hearts, test us and know our anxious thoughts.  See if there is any offensive way in us and lead us in the way everlasting.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
