Psalm 34:6-8
This poor man called, and the Lord heard him;
    he saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him,
    and he delivers them.   Taste and see that the Lord is good;
    blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.

New International Version (NIV)
               “Blessed are the poor in Spirit,” said Jesus.  If we could see ourselves as God sees us, we would be poor in Spirit.  We would know how utterly dependent we are for each breath.  The Psalmist is honest enough to admit it.  When we hit bottom and look up we discover that God has only been waiting for us to call so that he can deliver us.
                God is as near as a prayer.  It is not just that God sends an angel.  The Lord himself, omnipresent, surrounds those who fear him and delivers us.  My friend Will Davis first called this verse to my attention when we were college students.  Over 1600 miles from home and my parents, it was good to know that God was near.  He still is!
                Have we tasted the Lord’s goodness?  If we took the time to taste we would see that he is good.  He is our refuge so we run to him and find deliverance.  In another beatitude Jesus taught, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be filled.”  I believe it.  Do you?
Pray with me:
Jesus, bread of life, water which quenches the thirst of our souls, help us to admit that we are hungry and thirsty, empty apart from you.  God who fills the universe in every way, would you fill our hearts, too, today?  Help us to taste and see your goodness.  Of things we have had our fill, and yet we hunger still for more of you.  You alone satisfy our souls, so we call to you, we come to you and we find refuge.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
I want to invite you to join me in memorizing 52 passages this year from the 2017 set of Fighter Verses.  You can find the Fighter Verses App at the App Store on your phones or via this link  http://fighterverses.com/the-verses/fighter-verses/As we study the Bible this year, let's look at each text and learn what it says about God.
Joyfully,
