John 14:2-3
My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
New International Version (NIV)
How old were you when you were given your own room?  I had a few years after my brothers went to college to enjoy my own space.  After sharing a room with two older brothers most of my life, I couldn’t wait.   Of course it was really quiet, and before long I missed my brothers.

Our Father’s house has many rooms – many places to dwell.  Remember the context in which Jesus taught this to his disciples.  That very night they had argued over who would be greater than the others, vying for a spot at Jesus’ right or left hand.  He had washed their feet and fed them the Last Supper.  The more he spoke of his impending crucifixion, the more they worried.  So he spoke, “Let not your hearts be troubled . . . you believe . . .”

We enter relationship with God by grace through faith.  As we trust him, we believe he has a place for us in his heart and in his home.  Thomas, the Eeyore of the disciples was skeptical.  “We don’t know where you are going so how can we know the way?”  Jesus answered definitively:  “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.”  The key to getting your own room is to have the right older Brother.  His name is Jesus.  He is preparing a place for you and preparing you for that place.  We may wonder how God is progressing with our place in heaven.  How are we progressing in our preparation? Let’s make progress today!
Pray with me:
Father, thank you for preparing a place for us.  We confess that we say we want to go to heaven, but we are not ready to load up today.  Even when we talk about life we say it is better than the alternative.  Remind us Lord of how beautiful life with you will be so that we may purposely, consciously live life with you today.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
