Scripps Scientists in Antarctica Studying Retreating Glaciers, Cancer-Fighting Microbes and More
Scientists from UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Scripps Polar Center are conducting field research at the bottom of the world, relying on international partnerships and creative solutions after the U.S. lost its only dedicated Antarctic research icebreaker. Jamin Greenbaum traveled south on the Korea Polar Research Institute's research icebreaker Araon to study the Thwaites glacier with support from private philanthropy due to reduced federal funding. The Scripps-led citizen science program FjordPhyto — a collaboration with Argentina's Universidad Nacional de La Plata and Antarctic tour operators — has enlisted more than 10,000 travelers to collect phytoplankton samples since 2016, building a dataset that would have been impossible for scientists to gather alone. Other Scripps scientists direct the Genomics at Sea Program which partners with Viking Expeditions and the J. Craig Venter Institute to study how penguin nutrients affect phytoplankton. Cell biologist Martín Tresguerres and his team, meanwhile, will study a sea squirt microbe that produces a potential melanoma treatment.

New Dashboard Helps Predict and Plan for Disease Outbreaks
Researchers at UC San Diego's School of Global Policy and Strategy, with PI Gordon McCord, have developed a new platform that is designed to help translate academic disease forecasting into actionable guidance for decision-makers when infectious diseases surge. The Disease Incidence and Resource Estimater (DIRE) uses geospatial predictive analytics on an interactive map to show where dengue and maleria outbreaks are likely to occur in Brazil and Peru and what resources might be needed to control and treat them. The research is funded by a grant from the Wellcome Trust, a UK-based health philanthropy and is partnered with UNICEF, and the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia amongst others.
