University of California Alianza MX is pleased to announce our latest Call for Proposals for Latino Studies Projects. This program provides up to $120,000 in seed funding for collaborative research projects that advance the understanding of U.S. Latino communities and their relationships with Mexico, while fostering long-term binational partnerships between the UC system and partners in Mexico. Projects can last up to 24 months and can begin as early as February 1, 2027.

UC San Diego has drafted responses to some of the most frequently asked questions related to federal updates as a way to keep the Triton community informed in an evolving landscape. For our community on the Health Sciences campus, there is also a new federal updates website accessed through a Health Sciences log-in.

An international research team led by Tomas Capaldi, a geoscientist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, has identified a new mechanism that demonstrates that the southern Andes Mountains do not rise slowly and steadily as previously thought. Instead, the range builds itself in short powerful "pulses" every few million years. This mechanism explains how mountain belts can expand far into continents and why these puses repeat over time.

An international team of researchers that includes Gordon McCord from the School of Global Policy and Strategy has published a working paper studying the desert locust, one of the world's most destructive agricultural pests. The study focuses on outbreaks of the desert locust across Africa, the Middle East and South Asia and demonstrates that when monitoring systems breakdown lead to costly consequences in stunted growth associated with malnutrition and long-term developmental harms. The study further notes that modest investments in disaster monitoring can help prevent these large human and economic costs.

The 21st Century China Center at the School of Global Policy and Strategy has a new director as of July 1, 2026--Dr. Margaret Roberts. Roberts who holds a dual appointment in both the School of Social Science and the School of Global Policy and Strategy conducts research on digital politics, information and U.S.-China relations. The Center itself is one of the top academic research hubs on China in the United States and Roberts looks forward to leading with the rigorous policy convenings and analysis for which the Center is known.

Professor Emeritus Farooq Azam has received the 2026 Kyoto Prize in Basic Sciences for his work in marine microbiology. The Prize is Japan's highest private award for global achievement and is presented annually by the non-profit Inamori Foundation in three catagories, Advanced Technology, Basic Sciences and Arts and Philosophy. Dr. Azam is the second UC San Diego faculty member to have received the honor.

Wednesday Coffee and Crafts is an informal, social gathering oriented around iScholars and iStudents as an opportunity to meet people, make friends, and practice English with local volunteers and fellow international community members. The event takes place every Wednesday at this time and place.
