PATHS is a Mellon-funded intiative that helps Ph.D. students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences chart a course toward careers in academia, industry, nonprofits, and government. This newsletter features career resources and upcoming professional development opportunities for these Ph.D. students at UChicago.

From Humanities Ph.D. to Career Coach and Entrepreneur

Are you curious about what it’s like to build a business with a humanities PhD? Join PATHS for a conversation with John Paulas (PhD Classics), who is President at PhD Matters, a consultancy that empowers humanities and social sciences PhDs to make a change for the better through work in the not-for-profit, public, and private sectors. Paulas will discuss how he draws upon skills gained from graduate training in his work with individuals and institutions. Paulas previously worked as a Director of Fellowships at UC Berkeley and an instructor at Loyola University Chicago and Davidson College. RSVP in GRAD Gargoyle (Events > GRAD Events).

International Affairs Career Trek to New York City

Info Session: Tuesday, October 8, 2019, 4:00-4:30 p.m., UChicagoGRAD HQ (3rd floor of the UChicago bookstore)
PATHS will lead an International Affairs Career Exploration Trek to New York City on December 5-6, 2019. Trek participants will meet employers, talk to alumni, learn about careers, and make connections for future opportunities. Possible trek hosts include the United Nations, Social Science Research Council, Open Society Foundations, New York City Mayor's Office for International Affairs, and Médecins Sans Frontières. Participants will be selected through a competitive process. RSVP in GRAD Gargoyle (Events > GRAD Events).

PATHS Opening Reception and Resource Fair 


Tuesday, October 15, 2019, 5:00–6:00 p.m., UChicagoGRAD HQ (3rd floor of the UChicago bookstore)
Faculty and Ph.D. students in the Humanities Division, Social Sciences Division, and Divinity School are invited to a resource fair and reception to learn about PATHS (Professional Advancement and Training for Humanists and Humanistic Social Scientists). Stop by to explore all the services that the program has to offer. Drinks and appetizers will be provided; faculty remarks will be delivered at 5:30. RSVP in GRAD Gargoyle (Events > GRAD Events).

GRADFair Registration Is Now Open

GRADFair is the annual career fair where graduate students and postdocs can connect with employers from industry, government, and nonprofits. Whether you are currently looking for a job/internship, curious about employers who hire advanced degree candidates, or just want networking practice, GRADFair is for you. REGISTER NOW and upload a résumé that can be viewed by participating employers. Log in to GRAD Gargoyle > Documents > My Documents > Add New Resume. Then RSVP by navigating to Events > Career Fairs > GRADFair 2019 > RSVP.

FEATURED COURSES

Build Skills in Arts Leadership


Slots are currently available for Ph.D. students who wish to enroll in BUSN 42126/01: Arts Leadership, which is taught by UChicago Booth faculty member Mary Ittelson. Interested students should email the instructor directly at Mary.Ittelson@chicagobooth.edu by October 7. The class runs for 5 weeks with weekly 3-hour sessions beginning on October 31 and ending on December 7.

PATHS Curatorial Research Internship, Logan Center Exhibitions


The Logan Center is hiring an intern to support the curatorial staff of Logan Center Exhibitions in organizing a series of major public events and programs. The internship will focus primarily on The Ties That Bind, a multi-year research project, public program, and online platform that explores the history of Pan-Africanism and its articulation in the arts and culture of the contemporary African diaspora. Get Funding from Graduate Council 


Did you know that Graduate Council has funding that can help you put on an event to enhance your graduate school experience? Two such funds are the Academic and Professional (A&P) Fund and the Social, Culture, and Wellness (SCW) Fund. Many events qualify for funding, such as an interdisciplinary reading group with lunch provided, a round-table discussion with a speaker you'd like to bring to campus, or even a movie night.
