Together, we are making strides toward achieving the ten-year outcomes in the Forward Momentum Agenda. This edition of Notes from Netzer highlights efforts aligning with those outcomes through work that prioritizes climate stewardship, expands experiential learning opportunities, advances equity and inclusion, enhances local economic vibrancy, and provides comprehensive student support.
As we continue to move the institution forward, I want you to know that your participation in these efforts has a positive impact. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts, ideas, and energy.
Just as we work to support SUNY Oneonta's growth and success, we are all thinking about our roles in shaping the future of our country. Participating in the upcoming elections is more than just casting a vote. It's about contributing to ongoing dialogues and the democratic process and fostering a thriving, inclusive, and resilient society. Each of us has an opportunity to engage and ensure our voices and the voices of our communities are heard on a local, state, and national level.
Sincerely,
Alberto J.F. Cardelle

Introducing the Office of Health Careers

Tracy Allen
Dean, School of Sciences
With a strategic expansion of our existing Pre-Health Professions Advisory Program, the School of Sciences is pleased to announce the Office of Health Careers. This makes SUNY Oneonta the first SUNY comprehensive institution with a dedicated office to serve Pre-Health Professional Students and students interested in a career in the healthcare industry.
The Office of Health Careers will continue our specialized advising and support for students preparing to apply to Health Professional Schools, and will also highlight healthcare career opportunities across the university while advancing affiliations with local and regional community healthcare partners. The School of Sciences congratulates Tami LaPilusa '12G on her promotion to Director and Advisor of the Office of Health Careers and welcomes Christen Turner '09 to our new position as the Community Employment Partnership Coordinator in the Office of Health Careers.
Tami has served as the Program Coordinator of the Office of Pre-Health Professions since 2021 and has been promoted to Program Director for the Office of Health Careers. She has spent more than two decades of her career directing, developing, and implementing programming for youth and adolescents - including at a science camp in The Bahamas, the Boys and Girls Club, a Watershed Education Program, and in higher education here at SUNY Oneonta. She also worked as support staff in Orthopedic Surgery and Nursing Services at Bassett Medical Center. As director, Tami will lead the Office of Health Careers, steer campus-wide initiatives to increase support for students interested in healthcare careers, and continue enhancing academic pathways and partnerships with healthcare-related professional schools.
Christen Turner was hired in October 2024 to join the Office of Health Careers as the Community Employment Partnership Coordinator. Christen has worked in local, rural healthcare, including at Bassett Healthcare Network in Nursing Education and IRB Operations. She also served as the Day Habilitation Coordinator at Springbrook. Christen will facilitate connections with SUNY Oneonta students and workforce partners in health and human services - specifically, coordinating Springbrook-SUNY Oneonta employment initiatives. Additionally, she will support to the broader goals of the Office of Health Careers and help students navigate their undergraduate pathway to a career in healthcare.

Oneonta Literary Festival Kicks Off
The beginning of the first Oneonta Literary Festival has been a success. From Oct. 9 - 21, SUNY Oneonta, Hartwick College, and the greater Oneonta communities came together to celebrate literature. Assistant Professor of English Dr. Sheena Mason began the festival by launching her new book, "The Racesless Antiracist: Why Ending Race is the Future of Antiracism." This was followed by a week of literary events, one of the most notable being a poetry slam held at the B-side Ballroom & Supper Club, where several SUNY Oneonta alumni performed original works of poetry. The annual Mills Distinguished Lecture, held on Mon, Oct. 21, featured a discussion between Associate Professor of Africana & Latinx Studies Dr. Maria Chaves Daza and author Cristina Henríquez. They discussed Henríquez's award-winning novel, "The Book of Unknown Americans," and took questions from the audience. Looking ahead, the Bright Hill Poets will give a reading on Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. in Craven Lounge at the Morris Conference Center. All are welcome.

Drive for 135: A Call to Support Students Through
Alumni-Driven Internship Opportunities

Laura Lincoln, Director of Alumni Engagement
Christy Funsch, Director of Career Planning and Networking
The SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association and Career Planning and Networking Center are proud to announce the launch of the Drive for 135: Empowering Students Through Internship Opportunities initiative. We hope alumni will help us secure 135 new or recommitted internship opportunities for our students between Sept. 4, 2024 - Sept. 4, 2025. As we celebrate the university’s 135th anniversary, this initiative seeks to connect students with valuable, real-world experiences—but we need alumni to make it happen.
How Faculty and Staff Can Help
While this program relies on alumni to provide internship opportunities, your role is critical in spreading the word. If you know alumni who are in a position to offer internships, we encourage you to share this initiative and direct them to submit opportunities using the link below. Your connections can make all the difference in ensuring our students gain meaningful work experience.
What We're Telling Alumni
We’ve asked alumni to support Drive for 135 by offering internships within their organizations or professional networks. These opportunities will help our students gain critical skills, explore career paths, and increase their employability. By participating, alumni will help ensure students are prepared to enter the workforce with confidence.
Your Role in the Drive for 135
- Spread the Word: If you know alumni who can provide internships, please direct them to our submission form.
- Support Student Success: Your efforts to connect us with alumni who can offer internships will help bridge the gap between classroom learning and career readiness.
Thank you for your continued support in helping us make the Drive for 135 a success. Together, we can ensure our students have the opportunities they need to thrive in their careers.

SUNY Oneonta to Participate in SUNY Top 10% Promise Program

We are proud to be one of nine campuses chosen to participate in the SUNY Top 10% Promise Program. This program is designed to expand access to an affordable SUNY education by guaranteeing admission for high school seniors graduating in the top 10 percent of their class.
For the first year (starting with students preparing to enroll for Fall 2025), 68 school districts in communities facing high adversity and with significant low-income student populations have been chosen to participate. Eventually, the program will be open to all New York State school districts.
We are honored to be part of this movement to remove barriers to higher education and make college more accessible for all New York students.

Two Faculty Help Launch SUNY Institute for Local News

Associate Professors of Media Studies Dr. Andrew Bottomley and Dr. Gayane Torosyan have been selected to help develop new journalism-focused programs and collaborations as part of the newly launched SUNY Institute for Local News.
This program is the first of its kind in the U.S. and aims to address "news deserts" and help struggling news outlets across the state with student-produced content. Another goal is to provide SUNY students studying communications and journalism with valuable real-world experience in their field.

SUNY Oneonta Recognized for Eco-Excellence

SUNY Oneonta has been recognized for our sustainability efforts in the latest edition of the Princeton Review Guide to Green Colleges. This accolated rating reflects our commitment to environmental awareness, acknowledges our environmentally responsible policies, and indicates we are preparing students for careers in the clean-energy economy of the 21st century.
The university has also been honored with the New York State Association for Reduction, Reuse and Recycling (NYSAR3) Leadership Award in the Educational category for our Move-In Recycling Program. This award recognizes an educational institution whose actions have significantly reduced solid waste or have furthered waste prevention. The Move-In Program collects cardboard, polystyrene, and plastic film for recycling during the new student move-in days in the fall. Before this program began five years ago, these items would be thrown away, or the plastic film and polystyrene (which require special recycling) would have been placed in traditional recycling bins and later discarded.
Associate Director of Sustainability Rachel Kornhauser and Sustainability Assistant Lindsay Wolfanger will accept our award at the NYSAR3 Annual Membership Meeting next month. Read more about this recognition.
