Grades K-7 Year-End Closings Plan

Dear St. Michael's Families,

One thing we have so missed during this unusual school year has been the opportunity to gather and celebrate the accomplishments of our students. We were excited when the Governor recently announced a lifting of restrictions that made graduation possible. At that time, we began to plan eighth grade graduation, and then the rest of our K-7 closing ceremonies. (Additional graduation information for our eighth grade families is going out under separate cover.)

Like everything else, these events must be reimagined, but our Lower School and Middle School teams have put in a collective effort to work out the logistics so that each child will have a clear finish for the school year. Closing ceremonies are not only opportunities to announce awards for writing, math, and citizenship, but also to finish the school year with prayer. We believe gathering as a community for these ceremonies is important and part of the School's cultural fabric, so to make that safely possible, we will use the first two half days of the closing week to accommodate the greater number of grade-level events. This change may present a challenge for some of our families, so we are providing a complimentary Extended Day option for those that require it.

For grades K-7, rather than have three combined ceremonies covering three grades apiece, each grade will have its own ceremony. This way, we can welcome two guests per student to the celebration. St. Michael’s will be executing ten total K-8 culminating events over the course of the week.

The tables below provide information about the time of each ceremony. Other important details are included in the bullet points below the charts to include dress code, information for students not attending, etc.
General Guidelines
  • Each student may have two guests. One guest must be an adult, but the other may be a sibling. Siblings must be able to remain quietly in their seats for the entire duration of the program (about 25 minutes). Therefore, it is not advisable to bring younger siblings to the ceremony.
  • Student dress for K-7: Long pants and collared dress shirt, tie, skirt and blouse, pants and blouse, or dress.
  • Masks are required for all guests and students. We are aware that the CDC is amending indoor mask usage guidelines for those that are vaccinated, however, we intend to finish this 2020-21 school year adhering to our mandated mask protocols.
  • There will be staff to direct parents to parking.
  • Parents who are attending more than one ceremony in a day may wait in the upper tent near the new Assembly Hall site where coffee will be served.
  • There is limited turnaround time between ceremonies, and there is limited parking as well, so parents are asked to leave campus directly after their child’s program. Should the parents wish to gather, gathering off-campus is appreciated.
  • Morning Gym will be open on Monday and Tuesday, June 7 & 8 (conducted outside) beginning at 7:15 a.m. Drop off is as usual at the Gym.
  • All K-5 students report to their usual carpool drop-off point to be met and taken to the classroom prior to their ceremony. Grades 6-7 should report to the Great Hall.
  • Note: K-7 report cards will be mailed to all families in mid-June.
Monday, June 7: Grades K-2 (Regular half-day schedule for grades 3-7)
  • Carpool drop-off is at the regular time for all students (please come at the END of carpool at 8 a.m.), however, students in grades 1 and 2 have the option to arrive 15 minutes before their program if they wish.
  • K-2 students may leave directly after their program with their parents or students may return to the classroom and be dismissed at noon.
  • Students returning to the classroom will meet their teachers at the gym field bleachers directly after their ceremony.
  • Morning Gym will be open on this day beginning at 7:15 a.m.
  • All students in grades K-5 will be dismissed at noon.
Tuesday, June 8:  Grades 3-5 (For grades 6-7, this is a normal half-day schedule with noon dismissal)
  • Students in grades K-2 do not come to school, however, complimentary childcare will be offered by the Extended Day staff (for families who pre-register BY MAY 24) if you wish to have your child attend.
    • Click HERE to register for K-2 complimentary Extended Day.
  • Students in grades 3-5 who are not leaving with their parents may return to the classroom.
  • Students returning to the classroom will meet their teachers at the gym field bleachers directly after their ceremony.
  • All students will be dismissed at noon.
  • Students may arrive at school 15 minutes before their closing program if they wish.
Wednesday, June 9:  Grades 6-7
  • Grades 6-7 Closing: Only students in grades 6 & 7 attending closing ceremonies should come to school today at their designated grade level closing time.
  • Students are to report to the Great Hall at their designated closing time.

We look forward to celebrating the end of the school year with you!
