Finding the “off” Cow
Fresh cows (cows that have recently calved) are the most important, and most vulnerable, group of cows in the barn. The first few weeks post-calving is the highest risk period for several diseases. Most infections, diseases, and/or metabolic disorders, such as milk fever, ketosis, retained placentas, metritis, mastitis, and displaced abomasums, or DAs, occur during this time. These illnesses can play a negative role in the cow’s future, either through the economics of milk production or animal well-being.
As caretakers, it is important to be able to identify an “off” cow, one that is just not looking or acting right. By identifying her early, one can take immediate action to prevent or minimize the duration of sickness or illness.

Teaching Teens Life
Skills in the Kitchen
FoodWIse and the Boys and Girls Club of Fond du Lac County are partnering this summer to offer an 8-part cooking class series for teens as a part of their Healthy Habits program.
Healthy Habits is a program adopted by the national Boys and Girls Club that emphasizes good nutrition, regular physical activity, and improving overall well-being. As a part of the program, kids have the opportunity to prepare tasty and healthy snacks using typical ingredients found in their homes. Each week, ingredients will be purchased at the Fond du Lac farmers market to promote farm-to-table, fresh, local ingredients.

Flash Drought of 2023 - How Can We Manage our Crops?
Continued dry weather in much of Wisconsin has led to many questions about when we need to jump into action to manage corn, soybean and forage crops to get through drought situations. While most of our cash crops are not overly affected by dry weather until the reproductive phases of plant growth, there is cause for concern when we consider the quality and yield of our forage crops.
Whether growing crops for grain or forage, it is important to have a “game plan” for meeting your profit goals or feed needs, particularly in this challenging year. The recent Badger Crop Connect on the Flash Drought of 2023 provides a lot of great resources for making these important management decisions.
