Announcing the Formation of the Patient Advocacy Council

We are excited to announce the formation of Patient Advocacy Council. Joining our other boards and councils, this group will work collaboratively with the Institute staff to build programs and resources to elevate and support those working in Patient Advocate roles.
In 2014, we were excited to support the legacy and continued history of the patient advocacy field by welcoming the Society for Healthcare Consumer Advocates (SHCA) into our community. Continuing their 40-year history leading the advancement of advocacy, SHCA transitioned to become the Patient Advocacy Community of The Beryl Institute. Our commitment then as it remains now was to reinforce the vital role of advocacy for those we serve in healthcare and what that means to our capacity to deliver on the best in human experience.
While the new Patient Advocacy Council will replace the former leadership and work group structure of the Patient Advocacy Community, the resources and connections offered through the community will remain. Formation of the Patient Advocacy Council will help ensure the Institute's continued attention on the topics and opportunities most important to those working in the evolving role of Patient Advocate. The council will guide future content and programs, plan broader gatherings of patient advocates and serve as ambassadors for The Beryl Institute.
Applications for the Patient Advocacy Council will be accepted through February 28, 2020.

A Note from PAC Leader Kim Pederson
Happy 2020 to all! This is an exciting time because of the capacity for renewal. It feels good to start fresh with a new year, and to build on the successes and lessons learned from the past! One thing that I have learned and really want to build on is the power of gratitude.
I was journaling in my new book, Gratitude Heals, written by my friend and colleague, Linda Roszak Burton, and it was so clear to me that I have so much for which to be grateful. The awareness of that gratitude can be life changing. I am making a commitment now to journal regularly.
One of the things that I am particularly grateful for is the professional associations with all of you. I believe we are better together. Thank you to all of you for your encouragement, your ideas, your compassion, and your support. Please continue to be connection for each other in the coming year. I hope to see many of you in April at conference!

The 3 Elements of Trust
Trust is essential to relationship-centered care. In healthcare we put a large emphasis on earning, maintaining and when necessary, restoring our patients’ trust. It is a key driver for patient loyalty. Interestingly, trust is also highly correlated with how people rate a leader’s overall leadership effectiveness. How does trust in a leader translate to our caregiver teams? This month’s featured article takes a closer look into the trust caregiver teams have in their leaders and the three elements that are vital for that trust. Which of those elements is the most important component to establishing, or rebuilding, trust? (Zenger, J. and Folkman, J. (2019, February). The Three Elements of Trust. Harvard Business Review)
