| What is your name? Isabelle Slavin, ESIA '20
What is the name of your employer? U.S. Dept. of Commerce, Foreign Commerical Service
Where are you located (city/town and country)? Chengdu, China
What was it like living there? Chengdu is a really cool, innovative western Chinese city with an extensive metro system, which I used to get to work most days. Being in a more modern Chinese city, there are many similar dining options to what we have here like Starbucks, KFCs, and also many high-end shopping areas. Chengdu is in the Sichuan Province, which has some of the most famous food in China. Sichuan food tends to be very spicy, therefore at times I struggled, but I did eventually learn there are some non-spicy options as well. Having already spent time in China previously, I knew what to expect in terms of culture. However, the Chinese work culture I found to be a very interesting experience as it is much different than U.S. work culture. On the weekends, I spent my time exploring the different areas of Chengdu and I also visited other areas of China such as Chongqing.
