| Academic Senate honors best faculty, grad student mentors
The Academic Senate recently honored 11 outstanding faculty and graduate student mentors and teachers. The GradPost interviewed two faculty members, Judith Green (Education) and Tevfik Bultan (Computer Science) to find out their philosophies on mentoring. We learned that when it comes to mentoring, it takes a village.

| Registration open for Beyond Academia conference
UCSB's Beyond Academia conference is back again this year, and it's bigger and better than before. The annual conference aims to prepare UCSB graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in all stages and disciplines to pursue a wide range of career opportunities. Organizers have planned a day and a half of keynote speakers, networking events, interactive workshops, and diverse career panels. Space is limited, and the deadline to sign up for the May 20-21 conference is May 13. Get the details and register today.

| Housing cuts rental rates for San Clemente Apartments How often do you hear about someone reducing prices? Right, rarely. But Housing, Dining and Auxiliary Enterprises is doing just that. It has announced newly reduced rates for graduate students at the San Clemente Village Apartments, beginning 2016-17. The rates will be 20% below the current year's rates. Learn more about this great news for UCSB grad students.

The saying that "there's no such thing as a free lunch" isn't true. Join your fellow graduate students at the next Lunch & Learn, where you'll enjoy a free pizza-and-salad lunch and the chance to network, socialize, and learn from other graduate students from across campus. | Grad Slam 2016 is in the books. Congrats, Nicole Leung!
The topics were wide-ranging: from wolves and wild pigs to fisheries' challenges and women's challenges. Thirteen rounds of Grad Slam competition culminated in an exciting Grad Slam Finals round in mid-April at Corwin Pavilion. Two students, Phillip Rogers of Linguistics and Geoff Willard of the Bren School, were declared runners-up. And Nicole Leung of Biomolecular Science & Engineering was crowned UCSB's Champion. Ryan Sims: In a brand-new position, Sims becomes Associate Director for Academic Services in the Graduate Division. He also serves as a Graduate Academic Counselor.
Chris Sweeney: The Computer Science Ph.D. candidate focusing on Computer Vision works in UCSB’s Four Eyes Lab.
Rick Bacon: This non-traditional Education Ph.D. student is CEO of Aqua Metrology Systems, a Silicon Valley start-up with the city of Goleta as a client.
Jacob Barrett: The Chemistry and Biochemistry Ph.D. student discusses his research and the lessons we can all learn from his hero, Batman. Brian Griffith: This husband and father of two studies Modern Italy and Italian Fascism. He was also a 2014 recipient of the GSA Excellence in Teaching Award.
