Parashat Chayei Sara | Candlelighting 4:02 PM EST
Famously, this parashah is named “The Life of Sarah,” even though Sarah dies in the first line. Her life continues to shape the story after her death; so too do Abraham and Sarah’s deaths prepare the ground for new life. The change caused by their deaths leads Abraham and Isaac to become ready to receive new blessings—new generations, new stories of the Jewish people. When we’re in the darkness, we don’t yet know how it will give shape to new light. God’s blessing is a reminder that it will.

“All That Jazz”: Cantor Kevin Margolius' New Orleans
“What I try to do as a cantor is honor the diversity of our community. My Hebrew College pluralistic training in our beautiful, rich and diverse tradition grounds me and is invaluable in serving a synagogue like Touro. This community is anchored in its history as the oldest synagogue in the country outside of the 13 colonies and is deeply committed to the creativity and spirituality that New Orleans is known for.”— Cantor Kevin Margolius, Touro Synagogue in New Orleans
Margolius says Hebrew College gave him the tools to provide multiple on-ramps to help his congregants learn and experience meaningful Judaism, no matter their backgrounds or previous connections to Judaism.

Short Torah Teachings
Kavanah in 60: Thanksgiving
“It’s easy to be grateful when everything is going well, when the world outside our windows is lovely and makes sense. But often the view is blurred by disappointment, insufficiency, and regret. In Mishnah Brachot / Berakhot Chapter 6, Rabbi Akiva taught: Even if your entire meal is soggy gross vegetables, you should still bless it afterward. I was puzzled by this text at first...yet, upon consideration, I began to see Rabbi Akiva’s wisdom. You might not enjoy the soggy vegetables as you’re eating them, but afterward your belly is full. Sometimes a blessing doesn’t identify itself right away. Practicing gratitude in the complicated moments can help us notice what’s worth blessing.”

This fall, Jewish teens are engaged in rich Jewish learning through Hebrew College's Teen Learning programs: Prozdor Open Circle, Teen Beit Midrash, Jewish Teen Foundation of Greater Boston, and the Miller Center's Dignity Project.
"Teens are so enthusiastically engaged in our programs. We've intentionally created multiple on-ramps for them to connect with one another around compelling, substantive, and diverse Jewish content. Whether they are diving into Talmudic study, learning about leadership and tikkun olam (“repairing our world”) through philanthropy or engaging in conversations in Hebrew, their connections to Judaism and their community are deepening. It is exciting and heartening to see their passion and to watch them learn and grow."
