Making Healthy Choices the Easy Choice for School Staff |
Alamo City School recently implemented a healthy vending program to provide convenient, nutritious options for faculty and staff. This initiative reflects a policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) approach to workplace wellness by combining organizational policy with accessible environmental supports that encourage healthier behaviors—making the healthy choice the easy choice.
At least 75% of available snacks meet established nutrition standards, and staff have access to healthier beverage options and chilled drinking water. The vending machine is stocked with high-protein, high-fiber, and other nutritious alternatives, supporting staff in maintaining energy and focus throughout the day—and modeling healthy habits for students.
A recent staff survey highlighted encouraging early results:
- Frequency: Most staff use the vending machine 1–2 times per week
- Satisfaction: Nearly all respondents reported being extremely satisfied with the available options
- Top Picks: Baked chips & pretzels, seeds & nuts, water

Mobile Market Expands Access to Healthy Food
The Clay County Mobile Market is bringing fresh, healthy food directly to residents who need it most. By partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee and local community leaders, the program is tackling food insecurity in a county where roughly 1 in 5 residents has limited access to nutritious foods.
At the most recent distribution, more than 3,000 pounds of food — including fresh produce — reached 70 households (163 individuals). Every surveyed participant selected at least one fresh produce item and plans to return, reflecting strong and consistent community demand..
The Clay County Mobile Market will continue on a bi-monthly schedule through the end of 2026, working toward lasting improvements in food access and community health.
