MVA Partners and Supporters,
Thank you for subscribing to our monthly newsletter, where we share updates and stories of interest from the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance and our broader community.
Despite the summer months ahead, many of us are feeling deep sadness, anger, and frustration about overt racism, gun violence, and threats to women's health. We know that health disparities are often by-products, if not also contributing factors. At the Alliance, through our programs and initiatives, we seek to eliminate health disparities in our community.
As always, we hope you will continue to learn, educate, and engage with us!

MVTCP ANNUAL CANCER SYMPOSIUM
|
Since 1999, the Meharry Medical College/ Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center/ Tennessee State University Cancer Partnership (MVTCP) has engaged in interdisciplinary basic sciences, clinical and cancer control activities focused on addressing the disproportionate cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality in minority and underserved populations.
On May 14, MVTCP co-chairs, Drs. Venkataswarup Tiriveedhi and Sonya Reid, welcomed presenters and guests to the MVTCP’s 21st Annual Cancer Symposium. The hybrid event, hosted on the campus of Meharry Medical College, included cancer researchers, undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty members.
The annual symposium aims to provide a comprehensive presentation of the cancer research conducted among the three partner institutions. This year, the event centered around personalized oncology and racial disparities, which keynote speaker, Dr. John Carpten of Keck School of Medicine of USC, addressed in his presentation, “Closing the Gaps to Achieve Cancer Health Equity.”
Additional speakers included Dr. Zhenbang Chen, Meharry Medical College, “Mechanism and Oncogenic Role of Lysine Demethylase KDM5B in Prostate Cancer”; Dr. Ho-Jin Koh, Tennessee State University, “Tribbles 3: Novel Signaling Molecule for Cancer-induced Skeletal Muscle Atrophy”; and Dr. Maya Roberson, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, “Centering equity in genetic and genomic testing in oncology."
Special thanks to Tene Hamilton Franklin, Cancer Outreach Core Community Advisory Board, for her inspiring survivor story. And congratulations to the 2022 student poster presentation winners!
You can find several recordings from the event on the MVTCP YouTube channel.

TENNESSEE ONCOLOGY PRACTICE SOCIETY ANNUAL CONFERENCE
|
On May 14, the Tennessee Oncology Practice Society (TOPS) Annual Conference was held in Nashville. The conference was attended by two MVA staff members, Dr. Sunitha Vungarala and Meredith Smalls, pictured above with collaborator and colleague, Dr. Richard L. Martin III, Meharry Medical College.
Dr. Martin’s presentation, “Enhancing Equity in Clinical Research: Lessons from Community Oncology Engagement Efforts,” provided real-world examples and health equity solutions to reduce health disparities (e.g., food pharmacies at hospitals, expanded clinic hours, and transportation).
Other participants included oncologists, researchers, industry insiders, healthcare administrators, oncology clinic staff members, and legislative experts. Of the event, Smalls says, “As a clinical research coordinator I enjoyed the discussions on cancer care, peer-to-peer networking, and opportunities to collaborate with local organizations.”
TOPS is a community of multidisciplinary care providers involved in the treatment of patients with cancer. The annual conference is an opportunity to learn and discuss updates in integrative medicine and evidence-based practices for improving patient care.
