MVA Partners and Supporters,
Thank you for subscribing to our monthly newsletter, where we share updates and stories of interest from the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance and our broader community.
In April, National Minority Health Month, we build awareness about the disproportionate burden of premature death and illness in people from racial and ethnic minority groups. We encourage action through health education, early detection, and control of disease complications.
Transitioning into May, with its many health and heritage observances, we hope you will continue to learn, educate, and celebrate with us!

| STUDENT SPOTLIGHT:
TAYLOR JACKSON
|
Our Student Spotlight celebrates student members of the Meharry-Vanderbilt community, whose achievements reflect the MVA’s commitment to enhance and support high-impact translational research, interprofessional learning, and community engagement.
As Taylor Jackson, MHS, completes her final year at Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry, she will become the first doctor in her family. This has been a long time coming, as Jackson thinks back to kindergarten in Tyrone, Georgia, just south of Atlanta. Her friends would balk at her strange fondness for the dentist. “My dentist makes me smile,” she would retort, “and she teaches me how to brush.”

IPE STUDENT PROJECT CELEBRATION CEREMONY
|
On April 7, program manager, Jessica Jones greeted students, faculty, and community partners who participated in the seventh cohort of the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance (MVA) Interprofessional Education (IPE) Student Project. Following months of virtual collaboration, everyone gathered in person at The Local Distro to celebrate the completion of the innovative projects tailored for diverse populations throughout the Nashville community.
“I work with amazing faculty who volunteer their time to ensure instruction transcends the classroom to reach the community. I do not know how they do it, but each year the teams continue to exceed expectations,” says Jones. “Their ability to pivot demonstrates resiliency and innovation among these rising professionals, and I am glad to be part of a team that makes this experience valuable for so many.”
Through their joint efforts, student health care teams developed projects with Dismas House, Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency, Oasis Center, Our Place Nashville, MyFitScript, LLC, and Urban Housing Solutions.
Participating academic institutions included Belmont University, Lipscomb University, Meharry Medical College, Tennessee State University, Vanderbilt University, and Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Student presentations will soon be available to view on the MVA IPE Student Project webpage.

The symposium included presentations on topics such as health disparities in breast cancer, patient self-advocacy, and the cancer risks associated with obesity.
