Inside The Spartan Spotlight

PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Dear Parents and Guardians,
I genuinely hope you and your family are staying safe and feeling well. Thank you for your trust in us as we navigated and continue to navigate the situation with COVID-19.
It wasn’t supposed to end this way. School years do not end without people saying goodbye or without the final cheers of students celebrating the end of the school year. It is a difficult time for our Seniors who looked forward to this time of year – the culmination of four years and what it means to be a Spartan. They will have memories of COVID-19 in place of all the events that would have been. We have made plans to celebrate the Seniors the best way we can given the circumstances - we will host a graduation party for them and their parents. LETTER FROM THE VP FOR ACADEMIC LIFE

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, and Friends of De La Salle,
It is so fortuitous that our Spotlight was slotted to go out this week, as this is National Teacher Appreciation Week. I have written many, many times that we are blessed to have a faculty whose calmness, competence, creativity, compassion, diligence, flexibility, and collaboration are things of wonder. They make our mission possible, even when the world seems to have gone sideways. In lieu of the in-person celebrations we typically have this week, school leadership sent each faculty member a GrubHub gift certificate and all of our love and appreciation.
Here are other academic highlights I want to share with you: Continue Reading

LETTER TO THE CLASS OF 2020

To Seniors and Seniors’ Parents and Guardians,
Graduation is an important rite of passage and celebration, as are all of the senior events you were looking forward to. These events, ceremonies, and rituals will look different this year from coast to coast, but we fully intend to send you off in style, with love, and with laughter.  You have not been able to be with each other, and we remember how important that was to us when we were eighteen.
Since the crisis that has disrupted our lives may keep us sheltering a good while longer, we have been working on a variety of ways to celebrate you, your friendships, and your accomplishments. Although we must follow Contra Costa County’s and the CDC’s recommendations, we have developed options for graduation and other senior events so that they are personal and as human as possible. In doing this, we considered the many suggestions sent to us by parents, researched what other schools are planning, worked collaboratively with Carondelet, and, most importantly, sought feedback and input from our seniors.
We wanted to share with you our plans for celebrating your achievements and recognizing your class: Continue Reading

AP TESTING

Advanced Placement (AP) Testing for all De La Salle students begins on Monday, May 11, and runs through the following week, ending on May 18. Due to the coronavirus, original schedules have changed, so please review the updated De La Salle testing schedule on the school's AP Testing webpage. In addition to the updated De La Salle testing schedule, you will also find links to important AP coronavirus updates from College Board

CORONAVIRUS UPDATES

In case you missed any of our communications regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19), visit our website at www.dlshs.org/coronavirus to review all announcements sent to families during this time. We will post all our updates on this page as we continue navigating through this health crisis.

ONLINE LEARNING SCHEDULE

There are just three weeks remaining in the 2019-20 academic year and distance learning will continue through May 28. Our Flexible Learning Schedule is available on the De La Salle website, so please review the schedules as we close out the school year. The Flexible Learning Schedule includes AP Testing schedules during the weeks of May 11-15 and May 18-22.
The final day of instruction for seniors will be Friday, May 15. If Seniors are scheduled to take AP Tests after May 15, they will still be required to take the test on the scheduled day.
De La Salle continues to monitor the situation with COVID-19 daily and inform you of any changes made to our learning schedules.

CLASSICS OF HORROR - VIDEO TRAILER PROJECT

As an assignment in Ms. Alexandra Stevenson's Classics of Horror class, students were asked to create a horror film trailer using the pandemic as context. Students were asked to contemplate the following: Take some time to think about the current crisis and state of affairs. How has your life been like a horror movie or gothic tale? How have your experiences connected to the central tropes and motifs we have discussed as part of our study of gothic literature and horror film? Ms. Stevenson shared the project submitted by De La Salle student Ryan Bean. The following video helps provide an examination of how students are feeling and what they are going through (really, what we are all going through) during this stay at home order.

AUCTION THANK YOU & BROTHERHOOD FUND

Thank You to All Who Supported the
De La Salle Auction - Blue Jean Ball

While we had to shift our approach to our annual spring auction, The Blue Jean Ball was a great success, and we couldn’t have done it without the support of the De La Salle community. So many supported this effort - those that donated auction items, our bidders, generous donors that made gifts to the Brotherhood Fund, and everyone who converted their event ticket purchases to donations - all made a huge difference in the lives of our students.
At this time, we would like to express tremendous thanks to our sponsors for their support of The Blue Jean Ball and their help with the transition to an online event:
  • Scholarship Sponsors: The Casillas Family, Jill Fusari, Realtor The Agency, The Seeno-Miles Family
  • Brotherhood Sponsors: Pat and Laura Lencioni, Ron and Robyn Pawlo, Montano & Associates International Investigations
  • We would also like to thank our auction committee: Caroline Buckley P ’15, ’18, Monica Byers ’20, Lynne Kenny P ’21, Liz Mechelke P ’21, ‘24, and Renee Semeny P ’22. Thank you all so very much for your time and efforts to make this event such a success.
While we are still tallying our final numbers, we’re excited to share that we exceeded our goal and raised more than $105,000 through this online event!
De La Salle Brotherhood Fund
If you did not get a chance to participate in the auction, there is still time to show your support with a gift to the Brotherhood Fund. The Brotherhood Fund enables all students to live the full De La Salle experience. Several hundred of our young men received Brotherhood Fund support this past year. Food, appropriate clothing for liturgies, prom tickets, fees for Kairos and other retreats, athletic uniforms, specialized calculators for math classes - all these are examples of everyday expenses that are beyond the ordinary reach of many in our community. The Brotherhood Fund helps families meet these needs.

BROTHER MARIS GOLF TOURNAMENT

CAMPUS MINISTRY

"Be satisfied with what you can do, since this satisfies God, but do not spare yourself in what you can do with the help of grace. Be convinced that, provided you are willing, you can do more with the help of God's grace than you imagine."
--- St. John Baptist de La Salle
Campus Ministry has taken these words of the Founder to heart and has found a way to offer the Senior Mother/Son Liturgy on Mother’s Day with a video link that will be sent to all seniors via Schoology on Saturday, May 9.

Adjustments are as follows:
  • Transcript request – please email me for a transcript. For current students, a parent or the student may request, for a graduate the student himself must send the email. For official transcripts the Registrar can mail or arrange for pickup at my home.  For college admissions, please continue to request via Naviance.
  • Work Permits - Please email me and we will arrange a time to meet for signatures.  The student must bring the Intent to Employ in person for signature.
  • Enrollment – If you plan on withdrawing your student at the end of this school year you must first contact me so that clearance processes can be started and paperwork printed.
  • Education Verification – Please contact me via email not fax because I am only retrieving my faxes occasionally.
All other requests can be made via email.
Thank you for your patience.
