This fall, Ball State welcomed a record-setting population of freshmen that brought with it an influx of first-generation students — students that are the first in their families to pursue higher education. First-gen English faculty and graduate students shared their stories and some stellar photos from their college days. For a more in-depth look into the project, visit our Facebook album, too.

To combat the negative narrative about teaching in Indiana today, the department launched a month-long campaign on October 15th. The goal was to tell lots of inspiring stories by real teachers. They’re all included in Prof. Benko’s “Letter from the Director.”

The Stars to Steer By alumni career series is coming back in Spring 2020--featuring 7 English alumni who have offered to come back to campus to meet with students and share their career journey.

Abby Hoops graduated in 2017 with a B.A. in English with a concentration in Creative Writing.  She also double minored in Digital Publishing and Professional Writing and Emerging Media.  She currently works as both a tech writer and a graphic illustrator/artist in Crane, Indiana, where her government job requires a variety of skills in both writing and technology.

Eric Wyman is a Ball State alumni with a bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature. He has worked several odd jobs since graduating from the English department and has now landed at The Writing Prompt Exchange where he works as a fiction editor. He also served for AmeriCorps NCCC.
