SCHOOL SAFETY

Like all schools, The Academy strives to ensure a safe campus. Over recent years, we have made upgrades to our facility to help ensure this, and we will continue to educate our community about how to take care of itself. In that vein, we will be conducting a lockdown drill during A block on the morning of Tuesday, October 2nd.

STUDENTS SPEAKING
THEIR MINDS

Led by senior Sophia C, students held a walkout on Monday afternoon to show their support of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford in her allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Nearly 75% of our student body participated, along with a few faculty members. They held ten minutes of silence for what happened to Dr. Ford, and for victims of sexual assault and harassment more broadly. In demonstrating for their beliefs, they joined students in schools across the country. By standing up for their convictions, they inspire all of us to do the same when so moved by our own.

SPORTS RECAP, WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 24

The Boys JV 6th-10th grade soccer team defeated Eaglebrook on Monday by a score of 11-0. Anders G-B (3), Sam R (2), Raymond (2), Charlie, Atticus, Julien, and Gus scored, while Atticus also contributed a number of assists. Skye L and Sam B showed great positional awareness and nice passing, while Nick C had a strong game on defense. It was a consistent effort from the team, as they demonstrated great support for one another.

On a very wet Tuesday, the JV mixed gender soccer team came back from a 1-0 first half deficit to defeat Hartsbrook on their home field, 2-1. Atticus R scored an unassisted goal and Charlie P netted the game winner on a pass from Gus G. Skye L played a very strong game, as did the P-C sisters, and Gus G came oh-so-close to scoring on several occasions. The Aardvarks outshot the Tigers by a 4-1 margin. On Thursday, the team traveled to Hadley to play the Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School and came home with their third straight victory, 2-1. Aardvark goals were scored by Atticus R (penalty kick) and Skye L (nicely assisted by both Nick F and Ruby C). Gus G and Anders G-B shared goalkeeping duties, combining for 13 saves. Newcomers Julien T C, Ellis W, Sam B, and Tayanna L have all improved weekly and contributed to a solid overall team effort. Charlemont had 11 shots on goal.
On Wednesday, the boys Varsity lost 4-3 to Four Rivers. Tucker ZA, Nat BO, and Nico V found the net, while Bennett B played well defensively.

The Academy Cross-Country team had its first RVAL race of the season on Wednesday at Northfield Mount Hermon. Will D led the way for AaC boys, coming in 5th out of 73 male runners. The girls team was led by Avery M, Aislyn J, and Paloma H-S who finished 4th, 6th, and 7th respectively out of 53 female runners.

APC PIE SALE
(More details below, too)

Thanks to all those who have already volunteered to bake pies for the October 6 (next Saturday) APC Pie Sale at the Ashfield Fall Festival. We have a projected 35 pies to date being baked in your homes and a goal of 24 to be made at the Pie Bee.

We sold 103 pies in 2017 and raised over $1,400 for APC support of The Academy's staff and students. We have recently purchased a new Aardvark Mascot costume to promote school spirit. In previous years we purchased the school's customized pop up tent, fans for classrooms and provided much needed coffee for the staff.

Every pie is a 100% investment in The Academy. Please consider helping us bring our total number up towards 100. The community loves them!

We will contact bakers, pie bee folks, and sale volunteers with specifics this weekend.  Pie tins and boxes are available at The Academy (in Martha Tirk’s office). All kinds of pies are welcome: apple, blueberry, peach, pecan, pumpkin, gluten free crust.....your specialty!

If baking pies isn't your thing, let us know if you are able to help sell the pies on the day of the event.

INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY PRESENTATION

October 10, 2:15 PM - All are Welcome!

Thanks to the expert networking skills of Kira Jewett (P20), we have secured a speaker to come present to our community on issues related to Indigenous Peoples Day. David Brule, officer of the Nehantic Indian Tribe (CT) and president of The Nolumbeka Project, Inc, will be offering a presentation called "Archaeology and Healing at the Falls," focused on archaeological field work done by the Mashantucket Pequot Museum team in collaboration with the Narragansett, Aquinnah Wampanog, and Nipmuc/k tribes, all in relation to a massacre of indigenous people that took place in 1676 in what is now known as Turners Falls. Brule's presentation will take place on Wednesday, October 10th at 2:15 PM in the Sumner Recital Hall. All interested community members are welcomed and encouraged to join us.

Blood Drive: October 12

The Red Cross returns to campus next month for the first of their twice-yearly Blood Drives at The Academy! The Blood Drive will be held on Friday, October 12, from 1:00 to 6:00 PM. Students will be bringing home donor forms (and parental consent forms, for students age 16), with the goal of every student finding at least one person to donate blood. Appointments can be made by filling out the donor form and turning it in to the Main Office, or by calling the Main Office during regular business hours, or by visiting the Red Cross Blood Drive appointment page and entering our zip code. Baked goods for donors are also a high priority, so there are ways for everyone to lend a hand. We appreciate in advance your support of this important service event that both saves lives and helps provide scholarship money to our seniors towards their first year of college tuition!

A Warm Welcome to Frederick Bishop Miller!

Will and Madeline Miller have welcomed their son Frederick Bishop to their family! All are doing well and enjoying these first few, precious weeks together.
