Dear members of the Tufts University community,
At approximately 11:05 a.m. this morning, a fire was reported at 74 Raymond Avenue in Somerville, a privately owned property where 10 Tufts undergraduate students lived. Somerville Fire and Police, as well as Tufts University police, EMS, and paramedics responded quickly.
One student was transported to the hospital with burns and smoke inhalation and is receiving excellent care. Thankfully, all other residents are safe, and no further injuries have been reported.
Tufts University personnel from TUPD, Student Life, and the International Center acted swiftly to support the students affected by the fire. Resources, including temporary housing and emergency funds, clothing, and counseling have been provided to ensure they have the assistance they need.
This remains an active scene, and emergency personnel are on-site working to contain the situation. The Massachusetts State Police Fire Investigation Unit is investigating the incident. We will continue to work with impacted students to make sure they receive appropriate resources and support.
Our thoughts are with all those impacted, and we extend our support to the entire campus community.
Sincerely,
Yolanda L. Smith
Chief of Police and Executive Director of Public Safety
