Dear Eagle Nation,
As the 27 ranked HBCU in the nation, Coppin State University proudly carries forward a rich legacy of academic excellence, cultural pride, and social impact. More than that, we are also a vibrant and ever-growing multicultural and multigenerational community—one where individuals from every corner of the world and backgrounds come together to learn, grow, build lifelong frienships, and uplift each other.
Hispanic Heritage Month, which continues through October 15, 2024, is a time to honor the invaluable contributions of Hispanic and Latinx cultures to our nation and our campus. At Coppin, we believe that diversity is not only our strength but our future. Five percent of our students identify as Hispanic or Latino. The strength of our community lies in its inclusiveness—a place where each culture enriches the whole and where learning transcends the classroom to include the diverse lived experiences of each student, faculty, and staff member.
We are committed to building bridges of understanding and celebrate the many cultures that make Coppin State an extraordinary place.

| Maryland Legislative Latino Caucus Visits Coppin State

Coppin State University recently welcomed members of the Maryland Legislative Latino Caucus (MLLC) for a special visit providing a platform for meaningful dialogue between lawmakers, student leaders, and student athletes on key issues like multiculturalism, equity, and access to higher education. During the discussions, students shared personal stories of how Coppin’s welcoming environment has transformed them, made them feel at home, supported, and empowered in their academic journeys.
In my Spring 2022 State of the University Address, I outlined a vision for increasing the Latino student population. Over the past two and a half years, we have successfully grown our Hispanic and Latino student population from 3% to 5%. These students are not only enrolling at Coppin but excelling. As a cohort, our Hispanic and Latino students have a retention rate of 63%, matching the national average, and maintain a mean grade point average of 3.0, also on par with national statistics. Additionally, Hispanic and Latino students at Coppin are Presidential Scholars, star athletes, student ambassadors, and leaders, like Mellany Morales, who serves as the 2024-2025 Student Government Association President—the first Latina SGA president in Coppin’s history.

Coppin State Faculty Member Translates for MEAC
Dr. Christopher Rivera, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Studies Department within the Applied Social and Political Sciences, worked with the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) to provide Spanish-language translations for the press release of the simulcast of the Circle City Classic® football game. This initiative was part of the celebration of National Hispanic and Latin Heritage Month.

| Coppin State University Awarded NCAA Accelerating Academic Success Grant

"We are extremely fortunate to receive this grant and look forward to utilizing these funds to enhance our department's academic support services," said Nichole Person, Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator. "Our student-athletes have excelled, achieving an impressive 89% graduation rate, and we look forward to pushing the bar to make sure that everyone can compete inside and out of the classroom."
As one of 17 Division I institutions selected, this grant will enhance academic services, including tutoring and technology upgrades. Coppin State remains dedicated to fostering academic excellence alongside athletic achievement.

Coppin State University's Annual Golf Classic teed off with great success, raising funds dedicated to supporting student athletes. Held at Turf Valley Resort, the event brought together alumni, sponsors, and community members for a day of spirited competition and philanthropy.
"The Coppin Golf Classic has provided students with resources and support for over two decades. Through sponsorship and player support, the Classic has raised thousands of dollars for students and student-athletes," said Joshua Humbert, VP Institutional Advancement.
Coppin State's Golf Classic continues to be a pivotal event in advancing educational opportunities and athletic excellence at Coppin State University.

Catherine Addey, a Junior Health Sciences Major, has been selected as a DEI-B Fellow for 2024-2025 by the Mid-Atlantic American College of Sports Medicine (MARC-ACSM) DEI-B Committee. The program is designed to support and empower students from underrepresented populations in the fields of health and sports medicine.
Addey, who aspires to become a travel physical therapist, is passionate about improving diversity, equity, and inclusion within the healthcare system.
She is excited to attend the Annual MARC-ACSM Meeting in November to learn more about DEI initiatives and connect with other professionals in the field.

Risk to Reasons is dedicated to changing the narrative about HIV and Black women and increasing awareness and action around HIV prevention and care.
Since its launch in Spring 2022, Risk to Reasons has been activated across the country and igniting a new movement focused on HIV prevention and care. Join us to learn more and receive tools and resources to spark change. Together, we will explore how we can better serve and prioritize Black women’s HIV prevention and care needs.
