May is recognized as Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness Month. It’s also Bladder Cancer Awareness Month.

You’ll see reminders to wear sunscreen. To check your skin. To pay attention to symptoms like blood in your urine. This awareness matters.

But the next step is what saves lives. What do you do when something doesn’t feel right?  The “right” time to act is not always obvious.

If you remember looking things up in the Yellow Pages,
then maybe it's time for a Colonoscopy.

While the Yellow Pages may be a relic, the message is very current: screenings and early action save lives. Colonoscopies can detect cancer early,  and even prevent cancer by removing precancerous polyps.

Words cannot express the pride we have in our amazing Charity Athletes! It was a cold day, but their determination and impact shone through with every mile. They didn’t train for months to just run a marathon. They ran to help more people recognize the early signs of cancer and act sooner when it’s most treatable and they can get back to their lives.

It is a recognition that reflects something bigger than us.

It reflects a community of donors making life-saving action possible.

Because of your support, more people have the skills to recognize subtle health changes that may be signaling something serious and know what to do next. That matters because most cancers aren’t found through routine screenings. That moment—when something feels off, and a decision is made—is where outcomes are determined and too often, people aren’t prepared for it.

Together, we’re closing this critical gap  - equipping people with the skills and confidence to trust what they’re noticing, speak up, and seek care sooner, when it can make all the difference.

Dr. Marci Vitale, DNP, APRN, a dual board-certified Family and Acute Care Nurse Practitioner with more than 20 years of experience, shared practical insights on why establishing a relationship with a primary care provider before you’re sick can make a meaningful difference.

She spoke to common barriers that delay early detection like being “too busy,” dismissing small changes, or not speaking up in the moment and why those patterns matter more than most people realize.

As she put it:
“We’re here to help you navigate your health… the only way we can do that is if we have an honest conversation.”

Building on these insights, DetecTogether’s program focuses on helping people understand when to act, how to make informed decisions, and how to communicate effectively with their provider so they can get the most out of that relationship.

It’s about understanding your role so you can get to care sooner, when it can make the biggest difference.

The students at St. John's School High School in Shrewsbury, MA, adhere to a strict dress code. Shirts, ties, jackets, no jeans, and... NO FACIAL HAIR! So when they were given the opportunity to donate $20 to get hairy for a month, many of them jumped on it!

“Mustache March” became a student-led movement raising $1,160 for men’s health and early cancer detection education.

But it didn’t stop there. Students brought in DetecTogether’s 3 Steps Detect^® to build real-life early detection skills that can save lives.

Because awareness isn’t enough — knowing when to act and having the confidence to do so can change outcomes.

You’re too busy to be sick, so you just… ignore it. But early detection isn’t about overreacting. It’s about paying attention, trusting yourself, and taking action when something doesn’t feel right.

Real talk — this isn’t about spiraling or self-diagnosing at 2am. It’s about staying in control of your own life. Not “assume the worst,” just not letting something random steal your semester, your summer, or other plans.

And  doctors? They are not judging you. You’re not “dramatic” for noticing your own body.

If you don’t know what to say: “Hey, I’ve had [thing] for over 2 weeks. It’s not getting better, and I just want to check it out.” That’s enough. Save this for later + send it to the friend who ignores everything until it’s urgent.

August 16, 2026 will be the 54^th running of the Falmouth Road Race. The DetecTogether team is now complete, and is looking forward to running this iconic course along the sea.
