January is National Blood Donor Month, and the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance encourages you to give blood to help save lives.
According to the United States (U.S.) Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) Blood Establishment Registration database, there are 53 community blood centers and 90 hospital based blood centers in the U.S. Independent, community blood centers collect approximately 60% of the nation’s blood supply, and the American Red Cross collects approximately 40%.

Dr. Calandra Whitted Joins the MVA as Sr. Social Scientist
|
Dr. Karen Winkfield, executive director of the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance, is excited to welcome Calandra Whitted, DrPH, to the MVA team!
Dr. Whitted joins the MVA as a Senior Social Scientist, primarily focusing on the coordination of community-based health equity research, engagement, and outreach within the Meharry-Vanderbilt-Tennessee State University Cancer Partnership (MVTCP).
Prior to joining the MVA, Dr. Whitted most recently served as a postdoctoral fellow at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), the driving force behind advancing genomics research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Dr. Whitted received her Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) from Meharry Medical College, and her Doctor of Public Health degree from Florida A&M University.

Registration is now open for our third annual Virtual REDCap Day! Learn about exciting upcoming features in REDCap and unique ways others are using REDCap to do great work. This year's event will include plenary sessions followed by pragmatic deep-dive tutorials in selected areas of REDCap functionality such as:

- Data exchange between Epic and REDCap

| COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER TRAINING SESSIONS
Researchers in the Divisions of Epidemiology at VUMC and MMC are conducting a new NIH-funded study and would like to invite you to participate!
Adults between the ages of 40 and 70 who live in the southeast U.S. are needed for a new study. Compensation is provided.
The living environment in the southeast U.S. differs from other parts of the country due to climate, industry, and other factors. The goals of the Southern Environmental Health Study are to better understand how the environment we live in and the experiences in our lives may affect our health. By partnering with scientists and healthcare providers across the southeast U.S., we plan to recruit 50,000 study participants. Join today to help us improve the health of your community.
