BREBEUF JESUIT'S SPRING MUSICAL - THE KING AND I
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I is a moving, radiant story of East meets West.
It is the early 1860s when newly widowed Anna Leonowens sets sail from her native England for Siam. Anna has taken a position as the schoolteacher for the children of the King of Siam. The King is determined to usher Siam into the modern world, and he thinks Western education can be a part of that. The King is largely considered to be a barbarian by rulers of the West, and he takes Anna on as an advisor, asking her to help change his image. With both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and the King teach each other about understanding, respect, and love that can transcend the greatest of differences.
The King and I is full of beautiful music, traditional dance, and witty dialogue that has delighted audiences since 1951.

Loves About Brebeuf
One of my favorite things about Brebeuf and one of Brebeuf’s greatest strengths is that everyone supports each other. In high school, it is easy to follow the leader and not develop as an individual; however, with Brebeuf’s clubs, campus ministry, athletics, and academics, students are encourage to grow their whole mind, body, and soul. The special part about Brebeuf is that students also encourage each other to seek out these opportunities and find their individual interests. This support is felt throughout the whole community and it is one of the reasons that this school feels like a second family too so many students.
Favorite Class
Right now, it’s between my math class, AP Calc BC, or AP Physics. If I had to choose my favorite over the past 4 years, it’d be Pre-calc with Mr. Franklin.
Future Plans
I plan to attend Saint Louis University next fall. I am going to major in nursing and minor in public health. After college, I would really like to work in developing countries as a nurse and eventually become a nurse practitioner.
Teams & Co-Curriculars
President of Timmy Global Health Club
Co-leader of Pre-med Club
Work at Sweet Things (a candy shop across from Brebeuf)
Admissions Ambassador
K100 G1, K101 leader G4
Random Facts
I had 5 wisdom teeth.
I have the cutest dog named Izzy.
I love to bake and cook.
Breakfast is my favorite meal
How long have you been involved with TIMMY Foundation?
I got involved in with the Timmy Club at Brebeuf sophomore year, but I began going to the Timmy headquarters junior year to get more involved. Now, I am the president of the Timmy Club and I’m interested in either starting a Timmy Club at SLU next year or integrating some of the Timmy values into a pre-existing global health club.
We heard you traveled to the Dominican Republic to do some mission work.  What was that trip like?
I went to Las Canas, Dominican Republic, the summer after my junior year for ten days. The camp that we stayed at didn’t have air conditioning or hot water and we had to sleep in bug nets, so for a day or two there was definitely a culture shock, but I quickly immersed myself in the experience and ended up loving it. We did service for about eight hours each day and then we would have time to relax and go to a beach that was near our camp. We would then finish our days with an hour of a lesson about Dominican Republic and either their relationship with Haiti or their government. I not only fell in love with the country and the service, but I learned so much. That trip is the reason I want to work in developing countries after college.
What is your current favorite show or series on tv, Netflix, etc?
This Is Us
If you could travel to any place in the world, where would you go and why?
I’ve always been in love with Australia, so I would go there. I want to see Australia’s wild animals, especially kangaroos. If I could also go back in time, I would go back a few years to see the Great Barrier Reef before it became endangered.
You are now in your final semester at Brebeuf Jesuit.  Has it sunk in yet?
Senioritis has definitely sunk in. My excitement for next year grows as graduation gets closer, but it's starting to really hit me that I’ll rarely be able to see my friends and supportive teachers next year.
In what way have you changed the most since your freshman year?
It is was a very big change going from about 50 students in my middle school grade to 220, so I became very shy freshman year. Over the past four years with support from my teachers and classmates, I have become increasingly more confident in who I am as an individual.
Scholarship/Financial Aid News and Announcements
The backbone of all financial aid is the Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA) which opened on October 1 at www.fafsa.gov and should be completed as soon as possible for the 2018-19 year. Many schools also require completion of the CSS Profile CSS Profile, administered by the College Board, which asks more specific questions and accesses additional funds. The FAFSA is free; the CSS Profile has a small fee.
The VAST majority of scholarships (merit aid) are found within the individual college admission/financial aid websites and academic departments. Be on the lookout for additional essays, recommendations/nominations, and deadlines for these opportunities at the colleges to which you’ve applied.
Search for a specific scholarships in Naviance Family Connection in the “Scholarship List” under the Colleges tab. Sort by Scholarship name, Deadline, or Categories. Websites such as Scholarships.com and Fastweb.com are useful as well.

Brebeuf Jesuit and Butler University Work Together to Offer College Credit in Latin

Since its inception in 2006, the Latin program at Brebeuf continues to innovate. What started as 21 discipuli is now a thriving program of 100 discipli with two Magistrae (teachers). We offer a full range of Latin classes (Levels  I-V) and next year we will also offer Medical and Scientific Terminology open to all sophomores and above.
For some students learning complicated ancient grammar is exciting. Others find they can easily connect with the wide legacy of Latin literature.  Still others engage their imaginations in the diverse and etiological nature of Greco-Roman Mythology. In most cases the Latin itself draws students, but our trips to Italy and unique qualifications of our instructors also draw students.
Brebeuf has partnered with Butler University to offer optional Butler credit for Latin IV or V.  Brebeuf Magistra Rosina Catalan worked with the Department of Philosophy, Religion, and Classics at Butler to create this new offering. Professor Catalan, as she is called at the college level, regularly teaches classes such as Roman Perspectives and Greek Art and Myth at Butler.
Whether it’s in the field ascending Mount Vesuvius or in the classrooms of Brebeuf, our instructors Magistra Kris Schwickrath and Magistra Rosina Catalan continue to prepare our discipuli for college. As the poet Vergil once stated Fortes Fortuna Adjuvat (Fortune Favors the Brave) and those Braves who are bold enough to take Advanced Latin can now choose to benefit by receiving college credit.
If your third or fourth year Latin Brave is interested in this option contact Magistra Rosina Catalan at rcatalan@brebeuf.org.

The Ignatian Scholars Speakers Series Marches On

On Friday, March 9, Carrie DeBoy Krodel ’90 spoke to the Ignatian Scholars about her career as an Engineering Consultant at Eli Lilly and what her path was to get to where she is now. Carrie engaged her audience by peppering them with questions and also imparted the following valuable advice to the Scholars:
  • Find your personal connection to why you get up everyday and do your job.
  • Utilize your summers to gain experience in the field you’re interested in because that is what colleges and future employers are looking for.
  • Work hard now. The work you put in now will ensure that your life as an adult will be easier.
  • Know you audience. Know who you are speaking to and use the appropriate language and manner when you speak to them.
  • The ability to communicate effectively, both in verbal and written form, is the main skill that Carrie looks for when she is hiring someone out of college.
  • When working with people, remember the perspective of where someone is coming from.
We want to thank Carrie for taking time out of her busy schedule to speak to the Ignatian Scholars and we hope she comes back to visit us again soon! To read Carrie's bio and learn more, please click here.

Donate to the The Brebeuf Food Drive

Only a couple weeks remain to donate to this year's Food Drive that ends on March 29, 2018.
For years, our students, faculty, staff, and families have participated in this meaningful drive supporting St. Vincent de Paul’s food pantry, donating enough cans of food to fill two semi-trucks! In addition, cash donations from our school community are able to buy tens of thousands of pounds of food each year.
Homeroom classrooms at Brebeuf will hold collections to once again to compete for the grand prize – a pizza party. To maximize our school’s impact, this year’s goal is for every student and staff member is to collect 20 cans each.
St. Vincent de Paul feeds roughly 3,300 families every week, or roughly 12,000 individuals, many of whom are children and the elderly. Every can is helpful!
How to Help
To contribute to the drive, send any canned food items to Brebeuf Jesuit with a Brebeuf student, who will deliver the items to their homeroom collection. To contribute monetarily (Make checks out to: St. Vincent de Paul, memo: Food Pantry), and bring donations of support to the Main Lobby Desk at Brebeuf Jesuit.
By coming together during this food drive, the entire Brebeuf Jesuit community can make an incredible difference in the lives of thousands in need here in Indianapolis! Let’s bring in those cans to your student’s homeroom and support St. Vincent de Paul’s food pantry.
