February 26, 2025
Join us tonight for poppy seed chicken supper! Following dinner, adults will learn all about the Christian year and ways to prepare for Lent, Youth will have a homework night, and Kids will dive into spiritual practices.
We will pause the Wednesday Night retreat for the next two weeks to observe the Shrove Tuesday pancake supper, Ash Wednesday service, and spring break the following week.
Be ready to discuss the book Life of the Beloved by Henri J.M. Nouwen for our Wednesday night book club March 19.
Join us in partnering with East Flora Elementary School on this Friday, February 28th for Read Across America Day. Volunteers will visit classrooms of all ages and read books with very appreciative students. We will meet at PHUMC at 7:30 a.m. and carpool to East Flora Elementary.

This is always such a wonderful experience. Sign up with this link if you are interested. Contact Pastor Haven if you have any questions.

We hope you have Friday, April 4 and Saturday, April 5 marked on your calendar and are excited about joining with your Parkway Hills friends for a retreat all about the enneagram. What is the enneagram? Well, the short definition is a system of nine personality types that reveals your core motivations and how you relate to others. The long definition, well, come to the retreat for that! Don’t care about the enneagram but want to connect and fellowship with others, eat some good food, possibly win a door prize? Then come to the retreat for that! If you would like to help plan the retreat, join Pastor Dawn, Jessica Snyder, Susan Taylor and Jackie Buck, and Connie Starkey Sunday, March 2 immediately following worship. If you haven’t registered for the retreat, click here.
Lent is fast approaching and we have two ways to welcome the season. Join us Tuesday, March 4 at 6:00 pm in the worship center for our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, also known as Fat Tuesday or Pancake Day or Mardi Gras! This is the last day before the season of fasting and reflection begins. Historically it was the last day to use up all those rich ingredients like eggs, butter, and sugar before the fasting began, so pancakes it is! It is a day to gather and celebrate, and we hope you will join us.

Following the pancake supper, we will see you back in the worship center at 6:00 pm Ash Wednesday, March 5 to begin our 40 day journey of Lent in preparation of Easter. On Ash Wednesday, we confront our mortality and confess our individual and collective sin before God and our Christian community. The ashes, smeared on the forehead in the sign of the cross, are a symbol of mortality and repentance. We will offer a brief service of scripture, song, and prayer to be followed by time for you to walk through stations at your own pace to reflect on ways you can more fully live into the season of Lent this year. We will have some kid friendly stations so we invite families to join us.

We have heard that some of you would like to be part of the Congregational Care Team but the day and time has not worked for you to join. So, we are trying something new! Care Team will move to the first Tuesday of the month at 6:00 pm. For March, we will meet after our Shrove Tuesday Pancake supper (March 4th). What is the Care Team? The Congregational Care Team is an idea coming out of one of our Mission and Ministry Days Apart. It is a way for us to care for one another as a congregation connected in Christ. We meet monthly and go through members with Pastor Dawn who may need a little support and encouragement. We pray and we send a note to say you are loved. Can’t come every month? No problem! Come when you are able. We do encourage everyone to pick a month, show up, and aid us in caring for one another. If you would like to be a part but Tuesday at 6:00 pm won’t work either, let us know. We will keep trying until we find our sweet spot!
On our last day trip to Laurel a few individuals expressed interest in a day trip to Natchez. We are still working on the plans but hope to go during their Spring Pilgrimage of Homes. We need a number to effectively plan so check the date, March 20th, and if you “think” you might attend, go ahead and click here. After we have a better count we will send out a final itinerary and you can back out if needed. There will be a cost to seeing the homes, around $20 to $25 per home, and a cost for lunch.
Thank you to everyone who filled out our interest survey for a Sit and Be Fit class at Parkway Hills. Based on the information you provided, here is our plan. We will meet Tuesdays at 2:00 pm beginning Tuesday, March 11. The class is 45 minutes long and you will be required to sign a waiver. You must also bring $7 of exact cash or a check made out to Parkway Hills with "Sit and Be Fit" in the memo. We will offer the class every Tuesday through Tuesday, April 29 and then evaluate whether this format is working for our church. Feel free to invite a friend!
We have a new way to serve at Grace Place. Beginning Wednesday, March 5, you can join Pastor Dawn to work in the clothing closet at Grace Place. We will meet at Parkway Hills at 9:00 am, carpool to Galloway UMC (the home of Grace Place), and return to the church by noon. We will offer this opportunity the first Wednesday of every month. Our early crew that meets at 7:00 am to go serve the meal at Grace Place, will continue to serve the first and third Wednesday of the month.
Join us for Sunday School! The children's ministry will continue hearing the many stories in the Bible as we journey through the Old and New Testaments. All ages begin in the Garden Room at 9:30 a.m. for gathering time and activities. Then the classes break into small groups based on grade levels to explore the Bible stories. To sign up to teach an individual class one Sunday, *click here or contact Haven to be added to a rotation.
Save the dates, June 22-25, and join us for VBS at Parkway Hills. Children entering K5 - rising 6th grade are welcome to come and explore the Waves of Wonder at PHUMC.
