Student Spotlight

DESHON BLAKELY '16
Loves about Brebeuf:
The thing I most enjoy about Brebeuf is the flexibility of the schedule. Over the years, I’ve grown quite fond of the breaks and PRTs that we have between classes. The availability of my schedule has allowed me to use my time as I wish. Typically, I use my free time to finish any homework that I didn’t finish the previous night, or meet with teachers about concepts I don't understand. Also, senior privileges are pretty cool. In my opinion, the ability to leave campus to get food is probably the coolest thing since air conditioning.
Favorite Class:
At the moment, Biotechnology is my favorite class.
Future Plans:
I am undecided on what college I plan to attend, but I hope to pursue pre-med.
Teams & Co-Curriculars:

Volunteer for the Fay Biccard Glick Community Center
Varsity Football
Varsity Basketball
Random Fact:
Growing up, I watched Rachel Ray every day until I was about 10 years old, and I still don’t know how to cook very well. Also, my favorite movie of all time is Robocop 3.
Is Brebeuf as academically rigorous as they say?
Yes, I believe it is. My experience at Brebeuf began when I transferred from Pike High School after my freshman year. Immediately, I noticed the difference between the two schools and felt the impact of the challenges that were present. The transition from Pike to Brebeuf was not only challenging on an academic level, but it was also difficult on a mental and religious level. The transition forced me to grow up in many aspects of my life. The rigorous academics at Brebeuf have taught me how to manage my time wisely while also fostering a positive learning environment. So yes, Brebeuf is as academically rigorous as they say, but if someone puts their mind to it, and learns how to manage their time wisely, the academics come quite easily.
Who is your hero?
My mother is most definitely my hero. The obstacles she’s had to overcome continually motivate me to become a better son and a better man for others. She is such an inspiration to me and she’s an incredible person. She’s an incredibly intelligent, funny, strong-willed, and independent woman who I am very lucky to have in my life.
What is your dream job?
My dream job would be to be the owner of the Los Angeles Lakers as well as Kobe Bryant’s full-time manager.

Elizabeth Saunders and Tom Sweeney Named as Brebeuf Jesuit's Wells Scholarship Nominees

Congratulations to Elizabeth Saunders and Tom Sweeney who have been named as Brebeuf Jesuit’s Wells Scholarship nominees for Indiana University.
The Wells Scholarship provides tuition, academic fees, and a living-expenses stipend of $10,320 per year for four years.  Hutton Honors College advisors will work with each Scholar to design a program that takes into consideration the individual student’s interests and abilities. Wells Scholars may spend up to one year studying abroad, choosing among Indiana University’s many international programs. These students also are eligible for a one-time grant to pursue a summer internship, research or service project, creative activity, or other enriching experience.  The Wells Scholarship is among the most prestigious in American higher education.
The process eventually narrows the field to 50 semifinalists, who are then invited to IU to interview in early December.  From those semifinalists, approximately 20 finalists will be chosen to receive a Wells Scholarship. Brebeuf is cheering Elizabeth and Tom on!
Brebeuf Jesuit student Nate Meyers ’14 was awarded a Wells Scholarship in 2014.

Barcelona Exchange 2016

April 2-15, 2016
This long-standing exchange program is an excellent opportunity for Brebeuf students to experience family life in a completely new culture! Students are immersed in the Spanish language, living with host families in Barcelona and attending school daily with their host student. In addition to the host family experience, students will partake in many cultural excursions, among which is a full-day excursion to Manresa and Montserrat, two places with deep Jesuit roots. Students will also tour the world-renowned Gaudí masterpiece, the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia.
Two Brebeuf faculty or staff members will accompany the students and will be available to the students during their stay. As a result of participating in the Barcelona Exchange Program, Brebeuf students gain confidence and proficiency in Spanish. They may even learn a bit of Catalan, the other official language of the region! The experience is unforgettable and truly gives students a taste of the world beyond the doors of Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School.

Spring Break Immersion Trip to El Salvador

From Friday, April 1 to Friday, April 8, a delegation from Brebeuf will travel to El Salvador. We will be hosted by CRISPAZ, a faith-based organization that has been leading trips for school groups in El Salvador for the last 30 years.  During the immersion trip, students will experience the food, culture, and people of El Salvador. Students will learn about the history of the country, including the role of Oscar Romero and the Jesuit martyrs of El Salvador. We will also visit the Jesuit University of Central America in San Salvador.  Our accommodations will be modest as we will be staying in simple guesthouses. Daily reflection, discussion, and journal writing are all essential aspects of the trip.
A word about the trip from CRISPAZ:
The CRISPAZ El Salvador Encounter is for people who are willing to have their lives touched and forever changed. During your time in El Salvador you will have the opportunity to meet with Salvadorans, hear their stories, and accompany them for a short time in their daily lives. As a group of North Americans, you will also have the opportunity to reflect together on the challenge this experience offers personally, politically, and spiritually. We hope that the stories you hear and the experiences that you have will lead you to continue to work towards justice and peace in El Salvador and in your home community. To participate in an El Salvador Encounter is to enter into an ongoing dialogue with the people of El Salvador, a dialogue which we hope will challenge and change your heart, mind, and spirit.
The application will be available beginning Monday, October 26 and due by Wednesday, November 4. Please contact Nick Klingler (nklingler@brebeuf.org) with any questions.
