CHKD's Inpatient Rehab Unit
Equipped to Care for Children with Complex Medical Needs
CHKD’s Acute Inpatient Pediatric Rehabilitation Unit is the only facility of its kind in Virginia. Designed with children in mind, our unit provides comprehensive care for young patients recovering from illness, injury, or surgery — including those with complex medical needs.
Here’s what makes us stand out:
Comprehensive Conditions Treated: From cerebral palsy and spinal cord injuries to traumatic brain injury and neuromuscular disease, our team helps children regain function and confidence.
Expert Multidisciplinary Team: Under the leadership of Dr. Rhianna Leazer, a hospitalist who serves as the medical director for the inpatient rehab unit, patients are cared for by a multidisciplinary team of pediatric-trained specialists. Patients also benefit from the expertise of Dr. Dana Dasher, a physiatrist who provides inpatient consultations and rounds on the unit twice a week. Care is supported by highly specialized pediatric rehabilitation nurses who deliver around-the-clock, compassionate support.
Family-Centered Support: Most insurances are accepted, and our team can assist with insurance coordination. Families traveling from outside the area have access to the Ronald McDonald House.
Specialized Pediatric Care: Located within CHKD’s full-service children’s hospital, our 8-bed unit is equipped to treat children with complex medical needs — including ventilator support, tracheostomies, dialysis, and active cancer treatment.
State-of-the-Art Facilities: Features include private rooms equipped with overhead lifts, accessible bathrooms, a therapy gym with the ZeroG Gait and Balance System, and a motivating hallway designed as a jet runway to encourage walking and mobility.
