Owl Spotlight
Senior Kelsey Atlas has been at WISH since kindergarten, and we've loved seeing her grow. She is a Link Crew member, captain of the volleyball team, a club volleyball player, and in the Fashion Club, all while maintaining a 4.1 GPA. She has been part of the Westchester YMCA Youth and Government delegation for the last four years, serving as President this last year. She just won the Delegate of the Year Award for California when the group traveled to Sacramento this month. She credits history teacher Ms. Shea for helping to inspire her love of government and economics, teaching in a way that has helped her further develop her passion for civic engagement and social justice. She's already been admitted to USC, Cal Poly, Redlands University, and many more colleges and universities. As she says, "I would definitely recommend WISH Academy to other students who are interested in engaged teachers, strong friendships, and a community feeling!" We are so impressed with Kelsey, and we look forward to seeing her soar into the future, which we are certain will have a big, positive impact on the world!

In the Classroom
Our Visual and Performing Arts chair, Janet Landon, is both an inspired and inspiring leader, keeping our VAPA students busy these last few weeks as they prepare for a number of plays and WAHS's first musical. On Friday, our Middle School and Academy students were treated to a Black History Month performance that celebrated the work of August Wilson and Lorraine Vivian Hansberry. Next month, we're looking forward to the musical Dream Big: A Musical Tribute to Women's History Month, which will be performed at the Morgan Wixson Theatre in Santa Monica. We're excited to see our talented thespians in action!

Good Times
Since our inception, WISH Academy students have participated in the YMCA Youth and Government program as part of the Westchester delegation. Enthusiastically, in partnership with other students our young people focus on civic engagement, youth leadership, and learning about how all of our statewide and local political systems work. They research government policies, write bills, and have an opportunity to work on their leadership, debate and public speaking skills. A couple of weeks ago, our WISH Youth and Government group traveled to Sacramento for a 4-day state-wide gathering of Y&G members from all over California. For politically-minded teens, it was a blast! Congratulations to each of our WISH Academy students on this incredible acheivement!

Sports SuperstarsCheyanne Lyons is a WISH Academy Senior who has played an integral part of the WISH Academy Athletics program since her Freshman year, when she simultaneously played on the WISH Academy Girls Volleyball team as well as the inaugural WISH Academy Girls Tennis Team. As a sophomore, Cheyanne also participated on the inaugural WISH Academy Baseball Team. She just finished her senior season with the WISH Academy Girls Basketball Team, helping lead her team to a 12-4 overall record and an Ocean League Championship, and made it to Quarterfinals for CIF City Section. Cheyanne is not only an all-around great athlete, but she has done so while maintaining academic excellence. We are so proud of Cheyanne!

Hoots Student
"My experience as a 9th has been good this school year. I feel that the staff is caring towards students, both socially and academically. It also makes me happy to know that the staff want to see the students flourish and make sure they don't pass up any opportunities. The overall energy at WISH inspires people to be the best they can be, including being helpful and kind towards others."
--Brooke Curtis, WAHS 9th Grader
Family
"We are so thankful that WISH has created a high school that continues to promote the values started back when we were just half an elementary school: small classes, an inclusive environment, excellent academics, social justice, service learning, student voice, parent voice, amazing and caring teachers and staff. We feel the WISH Academy creates an environment students are known, and cannot fall through the cracks. It provides more opportunities for students to create, innovate, be change agents, and become leaders. And now that my oldest is in 11th grade and about to leave the nest, I feel comfortable he has been given a solid foundation for when he goes to college and am looking forward to seeing what my 7th grader will do once she gets there!

"I love working at WISH Academy High School because of the bond I get to create, not only with the students, but with my colleagues. It feels just like family! We love. We laugh. We cry. We support." --Ms. Cynthia Avalos, English Teacher
