In his lecture last week at the Beall Poetry Festival, Christian Wiman recited some of my favorite lines of poetry from Lucille Clifton:
but when I wake to the heat of the morning
galloping down the highway of my life
something hopeful rises in me
rises and runs me out into the road
and i lob my fierce thigh high
over the rump of the day and honey
i ride i ride
They’re good lines for days like these, when much in the world seems challenging. Indeed, like Clifton, something hopeful rises in me this time of year, its sources manifold: recent alumni hitting full stride in their new post-Baylor lives; current students making grand plans to impact the world this summer; faculty colleagues recognized for the steady, faithful ways they mentor students; and students, new research discoveries in hand, offering to teach us what they’ve learned. This is just some of what you’ll discover below in this month’s newsletter. I hope that for you, like me, something hopeful rises when you read.
Cheers,
