Corey Hancock, a counseling PhD student at the UMSL College of Education, started the club during the Fall 2022 semester. During the academic year, members will continue to meet weekly, but Hancock envisions expanding the scope of the club and taking advantage of the university’s proximity to the St. Louis Chess Club.

UMSL literacy faculty cultivates an active view of reading and community connections

University of Missouri–St. Louis literacy faculty members (left to right) Assistant Teaching Professor Martille Elias, Associate Teaching Professor Katie O’Daniels, Assistant Professor Doris Villarreal and Professor Rebecca Rogers recently met with Maxine Clark, the CEO and co-founder of the Clark-Fox Family Foundation, at Delmar DivINe. The group shared approaches to literacy instruction with Clark.

How a team of experts at UMSL is helping to build a culture of literacy in schools across the St. Louis area

In August 2020, Missouri DESE was awarded an $18 million grant for its CLSD program, which is designed to provide support and outreach in literacy education to students, educators and families in underserved areas throughout the state. The team at UMSL, led by co-principal investigators Shea Kerkhoff, assistant professor of literacy; Katie O’Daniels, assistant teaching professor of literacy and co-director of the Gateway Writing Project; and Nancy Singer, associate dean of the College of Education and an associate professor of English education, secured $5.1 million of the grant money to provide these services in the St. Louis region over five years.

Over 30-plus years, UMSL’s ACP has grown into the largest dual-credit program in the state of Missouri and one of the most successful in the country.

Students from Girls Inc. of St. Louis were part of a summer literacy initiative sponsored by the UMSL College of Education’s Literacy Clinic, with additional support from the E. Des Lee Tutorial Endowment.
