Softball: Franklin upends Centennial twice to clinch district championship
By Charles Pulliam • Multimedia Reporter
BRENTWOOD – Abby O’Hagan and the Franklin High School softball team were all smiles Friday night.
The Admirals defeated top-seeded Centennial twice to earn the District 11-4A championship in dramatic fashion at Granny White Park and the girls also clinched a home game Monday night in the Region 6-4A semifinals.
“I’m at a loss of words, really,” said O’Hagan, who pitched nearly two complete games collecting a combined 22 strikeouts while leading Franklin to a 6-3 Game 1 victory and wild 10-8 win in Game 2. “The heart everyone gave tonight, I mean, whether they’ve been playing for 10 years, or it was their first year, everyone was so driven to do well to help their teammates.
“It was incredible.”

Softball: Weather wins in 12-4A championship, forcing postponement
By David Dawson • Sports Writer
BRENTWOOD — First, Mother Nature brought the lightning.
Then, Ashlyn Easley and Saniya Hunter brought the thunder.
But ultimately, nothing was resolved at the District 12-4A tournament Friday night at Ravenwood High School, where top-seeded Nolensville and No. 2-seeded Summit were attempting to play the tourney’s championship.
Just when the action was heating up – with Summit teammates Easley and Hunter launching back-to-back homers, and Nolensville answering with a booming RBI triple from Lauren Ryan – the game was halted by lightning for the second time.

Baseball: Brentwood edges Franklin for District 11-4A title, region berth
By Charles Pulliam • Multimedia Reporter
FRANKLIN – After Sam Billington swooped in to pick up a grounder and fire to first for the final out, the Brentwood High School baseball team finally breathed a heavy sigh of relief. Oh, and the celebration was on and residents along Murray Lane likely heard the bus ride home late Wednesday.
“This is just so amazing and it’s honestly just the biggest relief,” said Billington after the Bruins clinched the District 11-4A tournament championship with a 5-4 win over Franklin. “This has been such a ride and we have all worked super hard for this.”
The win was the fourth in five games in the oldest rivalry in Williamson County and assured the Brentwood boys a spot in next week’s Region 6-4A tournament.

GCA baseball senior Wyatt garners Herff Jones Heart of the Team award
By Charles Pulliam • Multimedia Reporter
FRANKLIN – Fresh off picking up a save pitching in relief Tuesday night, Grace Christian Academy senior Parker Wyatt quickly shifted his focus to the next game – just like the Lions baseball team has done all season.
“We’re really excited about this season,” said Wyatt, who also had two doubles in the 9-4 region championship win over Goodpasture. “We just have to stay focused and come out every day like we have all season. We will stay relaxed and calm.
“Tonight was huge, especially for me, and it was a lot of fun, but we are ready for more.”

Commentary: Some guy

By William Carter • Columnist
“I hate liberals and Democrats,” were some guy’s final words to me just as I was about to leave. “Well, I don’t really hate ‘em … yeah, I guess I do. They’re the stupidest people I’ve ever met.”
He was about my age, I suppose, early- to mid-60s, and he had blonde/gray surfer hair, and his face was red, and he wore cargo shorts and a faded Led Zeppelin concert T-shirt stretched over a paunch that distorted Jimmy Page’s face beyond the boundaries of physical science. A pair of Oakley sunglasses hung from a lanyard around his neck, and there were open-toed, leather sandals on his feet.
He needed a pedicure.

Horses and zebra to be featured at Rodeo
By Ruth NicolausFor the Herald

It’s going to be wild and Western at this year’s Franklin Rodeo.

Wild animal trainer, outlaw, rancher and rodeo entertainer extraordinaire John Payne, the “One Arm Bandit,” rolls into town for the rodeo May 19-21.

And with him comes his animals. He’ll bring beautiful, tri-colored mustangs straight from the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota. These beautiful mustangs are direct descendants of the horses that escaped from the Spanish conquistadors’ herds and became wild on the continent’s grasslands.
