Commemorating Fall with GratitudeAs we near the final days of the Fall semester, our office would like to send a note of gratitude to all of our student veterans and military-affiliated community. Some of you have finished your semester already, while others are wrapping-up now, but everyone has come together to accomplish a great deal through this pandemic.
The adaptability and resiliency of our students, faculty, and staff was evident as we continued to plan and organize virtual events, build relationships, and advocate for each other.
We would also like to recognize our student veteran graduates of our class of 2020. All of your hard work is finally paying off and this is a proud moment for all of us. Know that we have an alumni community eagerly awaiting to welcome you.
Wishing everyone a successful completion of the semester and an enjoyable, restful break.
Clay, Grace, Evan, and Steph

Meet Our Community: Seung-il Suh
| |
Since 2009, Chaplain (Major) Seung-il Suh has been serving as an Active Duty U.S. Army Chaplain. He served with the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) at Fort Drum, NY, the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Campbell, KY, and most recently, the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC. His two combat deployments were to Afghanistan, OEF X-XI, RC-East and OFS XVII-XVIII, RC-South.
Before the Army, he pastored several churches in the U.S. and Canada. He received the Master of Divinity (MDiv) degree from Tyndale Theological Seminary in Toronto, ON, and the Master in Christian Studies (MCS) degree from Regent College in Vancouver, BC. He graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI with a BA in Linguistics and Psychology.
He is currently a full-time student at Duke Divinity School pursuing the Master of Theology (ThM) degree in Ethics. For this school year, he is in the Army’s Advanced Civil Schooling (ACS) program. Upon the completion of his studies, he will be assigned to one of several Army officer leadership schools and teach ethics for three years there.
CH Suh is married with three daughters. The family, which also includes two dogs, resides in Pinehurst, NC. He enjoys painting (oil and acrylic), practicing martial arts (Hapkido), and watching classical music and ballet performances. He is sad about not being able to watch the Carolina Ballet’s performance of The Nutcracker, in person, with his girls this holiday season.
He always has time to talk and/or grab cold (or hot) brew with any fellow (current or former) service members or anyone who is interested in becoming one. His ThM thesis is on the biblical concept of “honor” and how it can be helpful in moral leadership education and formation in a military setting.
If anyone would like to learn more about being a part of the military culture steeped in honorable deeds and traditions, or help him to explore this topic further, email Seung-il at seungil.suh@duke.edu. He goes by the initials "S.I."
