Welcome to the Class of 2027!
Earlier this week, the Oberlin class of 2027 moved onto campus, kicking off a busy orientation week full of open houses, welcoming activities, and the first day of classes. On August 30, 900 students new to Oberlin participated in Connect Cleveland, a Presidential Initiative that brings all new Oberlin students to more than 50 locations in Cleveland to learn about the city and Northeast Ohio, while building connections with their PAL/ConPAL groups, meeting Oberlin alumni, and identifying possibilities for future service, internships, and careers. Welcome to all!

Homecoming Celebrations to be Held Later This Month
With the addition of fall cluster reunions to Oberlin's Homecoming, there are even more opportunities for alumni to return to their campus homes. Over the course of the weekend, students, alumni, and friends of the College and Conservatory will have the opportunity to return to the classroom, enjoy special reunion programs, cheer on athletic teams, celebrate our newest Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees, dance the night away at the ’Sco, enjoy a fall Illumination, and more!

Two Winners Chosen in Historic 2023 Cooper International Competition for Piano
For the first time in the history of Oberlin's Cooper International Competition for Piano, the top prize was awarded to two participants. Pyotr Akulov and Sophia Shuya Liu were named co-champions following the concerto concert with the Cleveland Orchestra. The competition’s 2023 field consisted of 19 pianists, ages 13 to 18, hailing from seven countries.

Women’s Basketball Team Receives Academic Recognition
The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) recognized the Oberlin College women's basketball team for its academic achievements. For the 2022-23 school year, Oberlin led the North Coast Athletic Conference (and finished 32nd in the nation) in grade point average, earning a team GPA of 3.650. The basketball team joins the track and field, women's volleyball, and men's tennis teams in receiving special academic recognition this year.

New Partnership Connects South Asian Students with Oberlin
Oberlin has partnered with an Indian nonprofit, the Next Genius Foundation, dedicated to creating opportunities for standout students from South Asia to attend college in the United States. Established in 2014, the program provides ongoing mentorship, internships, and career support for all participating scholars through their college years and beyond.

Rhiannon Giddens ’00 Draws Praise for New Work
Rhiannon Giddens ’00 received an abundance of positive press for her recently released solo album, You’re The One. Among the highlights: she performed two songs on the Today Show and three songs on CBS Saturday; was profiled by CBS Mornings; and was featured in the New York Times and on NPR’s Morning Edition. These appearances follow Giddens winning a Pulitzer Prize for the opera Omar.
Performances of Omar begin again on November 5 in San Francisco, and Oberlin alumni are invited to a pre-performance reception with Oberlin Conservatory Dean William Quillen on November 7. Learn more and register here.

James McBride '79 Earns Raves for his Newest Book
James McBride ’79 has received extensive plaudits for his new book, The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store. NPR’s Fresh Air called it “one of the best novels I've read this year.” McBride was also interviewed on NPR’s All Things Considered and the New Yorker Radio Hour. He also signed books in front of a packed house close to Oberlin, at the Parma-Snow branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library. Conservatory Dean William Quillen (left) was among the fans in attendance.

Christopher Ayoub ’15 Embraces Passion for Research
Christopher Ayoub ’15, who studied anthropology and biology at Oberlin, is pursuing a PhD and MD at the Ohio State University. The Houston native received his first taste of research at Oberlin under the guidance of biology professor Maureen Peters—work that led directly to Ayoub’s first job after graduation as a research technician at Baylor College of Medicine.

The Oberlin Pet Club is a unique community where pet enthusiasts and sports fanatics come together to embrace the intersection of pets and athletics, as well as excitement, playfulness, and drive for adventure.
Members receive an exclusive Oberlin Pet Club bandana for each registered pet and gain access to a variety of club events like tailgates, community walks, and season celebrations. Best of all, membership is free and open to all members of the Oberlin community, and provides access to fee-free club events!

Gary Bartz Named NEA Jazz Master for 2024
Gary Bartz, Oberlin’s Grammy Award-winning professor of jazz saxophone and a vital link to generations of jazz greats, has secured a claim to greatness all his own: He was named a 2024 Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts, the nation’s highest honor conferred to jazz musicians.

Dana Jessen Wins Cleveland Arts Prize
Bassoonist and associate professor of contemporary music and improvisation Dana Jessen received a 2023 Cleveland Arts Prize award for mid-career artists. A soloist, chamber musician, improviser, and new music specialist, Jessen has presented dozens of world premiere performances throughout North America and Europe.

Aaron Goldman’s Research Featured in Popular Mechanics
Associate professor of biology Aaron Goldman is one of the lead scientists and co-author of a paper that outlines a new strategy for understanding the origin of life. The NASA-funded research is the culmination of five years of previous work by an interdisciplinary team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
