As the year draws to a close, I want to thank you all and wish you the best. We have much to be grateful for and much to be proud of this year. I am inspired by the innovation, collaboration, and resilience I saw all around the College, and am incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to work with all of you. | 200 Years Young, What’s Next? |
The Larner College of Medicine recently celebrated the 200th anniversary of its first class of medical graduates. As the seventh oldest medical school in the United States, the College has witnessed significant changes not only in medicine and science but also in the dynamics of America and the world.

As we anticipate 2024, we look back at some of our most popular blog posts from 2023, which showcased raising skin cancer awareness in the Abenaki community, embracing various personal identities, finding a career in medicine through lived experience, first-generation student success, and a non-traditional route to medical education.

Research.com has released its second annual ranking of the Best Female Scientists in the World, and this year’s list again includes three members of the Larner College of Medicine faculty: University Scholar Mary Cushman, M.D., M.Sc., professor of medicine and pathology & laboratory medicine; Jane Lian, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry; and Janet Stein, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry.

An art exhibit in the Teaching Academy features photographs by Cate Nicholas, Ed.D., M.S., PA, associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences and director of education and operations for UVM’s Clinical Simulation Lab. Her photos represent the third rotation of artwork exhibitions in the Larner Learning Commons showcasing the creative works of Teaching Academy members. The exhibit can be viewed weekdays 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

Mary Cushman, M.D., M.Sc., professor of medicine and pathology & laboratory medicine, delivered the Robert Reneman Lecture at the Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (CARIM)’s 2023 symposium in The Netherlands in November. Her talk was titled “Stroke and Cognitive Impairment in a Biracial U.S. Cohort: The REGARDS Study.”

Second-year medical students Shani Legore (Vermont Campus), Julia Halvorson-Phelan (Vermont Campus), and Alex Tran (Connecticut Campus) have been elected as Class of 2026 representatives to the Learning Environment and Professionalism (LEAP) Committee, charged with reviewing and recommending initiatives and policies to support professional behavior across the academic medical center and its affiliate training site.

A recent study coauthored by Mikayla Howie, Class of 2027, during her work at Brigham and Women’s before entering medical school, establishes a framework that bridges genetic variants and complex diseases through standardized phenotyping of primary human cells. The study identified genomic loci implicating genes associated with these cellular responses and discovered associations between evoked blood phenotypes and subsets of common diseases.
