Grant Seeks to Create Environmental 'Place-based' Program for Elementary Students |
Researchers at the University of New Orleans are using a National Academy of Sciences grant to create an environmental place-based education program for elementary students. One of the goals of the project is to help students make ecological connections between their everyday surroundings and their greater community, said Dinah Maygarden, a research associate and science education program director at UNO’s Pontchartrain Institute for Environmental Science (PIES).

Citizen Science on Campus for Biology 2 Students |
Undergraduates taking Biology 2 (BIOS1073) during the Spring 2024 semester will have the opportunity to participate in and contribute to a citizen science project known as Project MartinWatch. This project tracks the reproductive success of purple martins (Progne subis), a member of the swallow family, over a nesting season.

UNO EES Professor Madeline Foster-Martinez Heads Up Wreath Project |
UNO students worked with Maddie Foster-Martinez to design and implement a project in which discarded Christmas wreaths were placed in the Quarantine Bay area to help with coastal restoration. The intent is to slow down the water so that sediment settles and land builds more quickly in one of the few parts of southeast Louisiana where the Mississippi River is connected to adjacent wetlands.

| In Memoriam: Dr. Manuel Luis Ibáñez
|
The University community mourns the death of former provost Dr. Manuel Luis Ibáñez, who passed away on Nov. 30 at the age of 88. Dr. Ibáñez spent nearly 25 years at UNO as a biology faculty member, department chair and administrator. He retired from UNO as provost in 1989 and became president of Texas A&M-Kingsville.

| In Memoriam: Denise Banks '15 |
Denise Banks passed away unexpectedly just before Christmas. She had worked at UNO for more than 25 years, holding positions in the bursar’s office, the chemistry and physics departments in the College of Sciences and most recently supporting the Learning Resource Center and Academic Advising.
