Hebrew College Receives Ally Challenge Grant from CJP's Center for Combating Antisemitism
Hebrew College's Miller Center for Interreligious Learning & Leadership has been awarded an Ally Challenge Grant from Combined Jewish philanthropies' (CJP) Center for Combating Antisemitism. These grants will promote allyship across Jewish and non-Jewish communities through relationship building and meaningful action. “We are most grateful to CJP for providing us with funding to work in partnership with Newton Interfaith Leaders Association on this timely and urgently needed initiative,” says Miller Center Director Rabbi Or Rose. “While global and national events can feel overwhelming, there is concrete work we can all do in our neighborhoods and townships. This grant allows us to roll up our sleeves and engage in the sacred work of cultivating allyship in a very challenging time.”

This winter, Jewish educators are invited to challenge their thinking and deepen their practice through a short, innovative, online course offered by MaTaRoT: Hebrew College's Center for Jewish Professional Learning & Leadership. “Our newest short course, taught by talented educator Rabbi Batya Ellinoy`23 (right), focuses on weaving Jewish wisdom into our everyday lives to support and nurture our well-being and resilience—something we all could use as we care for our learners and ourselves in our sacred work as Jewish educators,” says Susan Morrel, Director of Field Experience and Senior Advisor in Jewish Education.

Abraham merited to achieve a level of sacred speech because of his deep sense of humility. Even though God promised Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars, he still saw himself humbly as an eved haShem—a servant of God. What does it mean to reach such a level of sacred speech? I believe it occurs when we realize the full potential of our words. When we recognize that every single moment is an opportunity to either bring holiness or destruction into our world—that is when we reach this high level of sacred speech.

Poetry and Song as Midrash in Motion
Join us for our second evening of poetry on Tuesday, December 2 at Hebrew College, featuring poet Matthew Lippman, author of eight poetry collections, including his latest, King of the Jews (Ben Yehudah Press 2025). “How does one respond to the terror of Oct 7? For Matthew Lippman, it’s through poetry. In King of the Jews, Lippman names many who perished, were kidnapped, held hostage. He names friends, students, rock stars, too. Lippman honors—and loves—them all. He even anoints them king, King of the Jews,” writes Diane Gottlieb, editor of Manna Songs: Stories of Jewish Culture & Heritage.

November 20 | 6:30 PM Reception | Concert 7:00 PM | Hebrew College
For dancer, choreographer, and Hebrew College rabbinical student Hadar Ahuvia, movement is more than activity. In her November Soul Sounds performance, “Field Work”, Ahuvia invites audiences to witness a meeting of Jewish liturgical tradition with contemporary dance. Through improvisation, collaboration, and deep listening, this staged performance will forgo spectacle in pursuit of subtle transformation that we associate with prayer, avodah, or spiritual labor.

The Soul Sounds concert and performance series is sponsored by Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation; Suzanne Priebatsch; Susan and James Snider; Diane Troderman; and an anonymous donor.
