What better way to celebrate our new shared campus than with an evening of innovative Jewish music? Hebrew College is proud to co-host the internationally renowned five-woman band Divahn at the dedication of our brand-new Musicant Cohen Center for the Performing Arts at Ordis Hall. The hall is named in honor of Myra Musicant, member and past treasurer of the Hebrew College Board of Trustees, and Howard Cohen, chair of the College’s real estate committee.
Flowing from the College’s abiding mission and the ethos animating our shared campus, the new Musicant Cohen Center will host events and performances that inspire deep and creative engagement with diverse Jewish traditions and expressions.

The concert is co-sponsored by Hebrew College and campus partner JArts.

A Renewed Partnership: Hebrew College-IYUN Teaching Fellowship in Adult Learning
|
|
|
“The curriculum for IYUN is as real as it is challenging, a great recipe for fostering long-lasting connection. It is easier to build community when we ourselves are in community and I’m drawn to building and learning with a cohort. I hope that the kindling that the cohort gathers will help fuel warm and vibrant communities across the city (and beyond).”— Heather Renetzky, IYUN fellow and Hebrew College rabbinical student

Moses and Joshua Halfway up the Mountain

It was as a teenager in a dingy hotel conference room in Queens that I first learned the text, “Joshua ben Perachiah would say, ‘Make for yourself a teacher, acquire for yourself a friend, and judge everyone favorably’” (Pirkei Avot 1:6). Around me were twenty-five other fresh-faced seventeen-year-olds, four wise faculty, two caring counselors, and two brilliant directors. Sharing interpretations, opinions, and personal narratives, we began to unpack this text and became each other’s teachers. The words of Pirkei Avot became our constant companion and inspiration throughout our summer together.

With the outbreak of COVID-19, my workplace shut its doors. Life was on hold. I had an endless amount of time to reflect and process. It took a pandemic for me to re-evaluate the boundaries of my box and realize that, within its borders, I was sacrificing my passions.
Fast forward to a year later. I enrolled in Hebrew College as a cantorial student and was about halfway through my first semester of Mekorot when the idea of transferring into the Rav-Hazzan program began to intrigue me...
