May 2024 e-newsletter for Council Member David Little
From the desk of Council Member David Little, District 2
Heads-Up, Huntsville
Did you know distracted driving crashes kill nearly nine people every day? April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and Council Member Little wants to remind Huntsville drivers about the City’s Hands-Free Ordinance, which prohibits the use of any hand-held device during operation of a motor vehicle.
Need more information? Read the ordinance or visit the Hands-Free Ordinance page, which includes frequently asked questions.
Hear directly from Council Member Little on the new Hands-Free Ordinance at the next Huntsville Police Citizens Advisory Council meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, in the AV Room at Hampton Cove Middle School. Don’t miss it!

Changing Spaces
Apologies for any inconvenience as the City Council offices move from the old City Hall to our beautiful new building across the street. While we strive to maintain responsiveness to citizens' calls and emails during the transition, we kindly request your patience as we settle into our new space on the sixth floor. The project is reaching its final stages, and we eagerly anticipate the ribbon-cutting and grand opening ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21. We can’t wait to unveil our new home to the public.
The Roads Most Traveled
Have you heard the good news? City Council gave the green light for another phase of roadwork resurfacing, which should be welcome news to drivers. Click here to see if your road made the list. Do you know a road that requires attention? Feel free to send Council Member Little an email or report the issue through Huntsville Connect.

Earth Day Fun
Despite a few raindrops, it was a great turnout at the annual Earth Day event at Hays Nature Preserve. Kudos to Huntsville’s Green Team, which does a wonderful job with this important observance each year. If you missed this year’s celebration, mark your calendar and make plans to join us at Hays next year.
On the Front Row
Council Member Little had the pleasure of joining fellow Council Members Bill Kling, Jennie Robinson and John Meredith at the groundbreaking ceremony for Front Row Huntsville, the mixed-use development under construction on Clinton Avenue near the VBC. The project includes 47,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, 34,500 square feet of office space and more than 500 apartments. This will be a transformative project for downtown Huntsville.

Community Meetings
Council Member Little’s busy schedule has included recent appearances at community meetings, including the Blossomwood Valley Civic Association’s annual meeting and Monte Sano Civic Association. At the latter meeting, he applauded the efforts of residents Matt Burke and Lee Haymes, who sacrificed their safety to help their neighbors during the January ice storm.
Lessons in Leadership
Council Member Little was honored to be asked by Leadership Greater Huntsville to participate in a roundtable discussion as part of Focus Class 46. The group’s mission is to educate, inspire and connect leaders to build a better community.
More recently, he addressed the spring cohort of the Civic Engagement Academy, a free course provided by the City’s Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. Class participants asked about roads, City Council’s role in municipal government and the recently announced South Star Music Festival.
Get Healthy, Huntsville!
Warmer weather is on the way, and there's never been a better time to focus on our health. Three upcoming events can help you with your spring and summer fitness goals.
On Saturday, May 4, join the fun at the 15th annual Mayor’s Bike Ride & Block Party, presented by Healthy Huntsville. The event is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Big Spring Park. Registration for the 4-mile bike ride through downtown Huntsville starts at 10:30. When the ride’s over, stay for the block party fun.
Happening in Big Spring Park the same morning is Fitness in the Park, the annual workout series held each Saturday in May and June. This season kicks off with Family Boot Camp, presented by Burn Boot Camp. The workout starts at 10 a.m. sharp.
Finally, for those who prefer a more relaxing workout, check out Yoga By the River, hosted by Green Team and held Saturdays in May and June at Hays Nature Preserve. The free, one-hour yoga classes are from 8-9 a.m. next to the Flint River.
These are all great opportunities to get active and maybe even make a new friend or two.
