INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY PRESENTATION

October 10, 2:15 PM - All are Welcome!

Thanks to the expert networking skills of Kira Jewett (P20), we have secured a speaker to come present to our community on issues related to Indigenous Peoples Day. David Brule, officer of the Nehantic Indian Tribe (CT) and president of The Nolumbeka Project, Inc, will be offering a presentation called "Archaeology and Healing at the Falls," focused on archaeological field work done by the Mashantucket Pequot Museum team in collaboration with the Narragansett, Aquinnah Wampanog, and Nipmuc/k tribes, all in relation to a massacre of indigenous people that took place in 1676 in what is now known as Turners Falls. Brule's presentation will take place on Wednesday, October 10th at 2:15 PM in the Sumner Recital Hall. All interested community members are welcomed and encouraged to join us.

Blood Drive: October 12

The Red Cross returns to campus next month for the first of their twice-yearly Blood Drives at The Academy! The Blood Drive will be held on Friday, October 12, from 1:00 to 6:00 PM. Students will be bringing home donor forms (and parental consent forms, for students age 16), with the goal of every student finding at least one person to donate blood. Appointments can be made by filling out the donor form and turning it in to the Main Office, or by calling the Main Office during regular business hours, or by visiting the Red Cross Blood Drive appointment page and entering our zip code. Baked goods for donors are also a high priority, so there are ways for everyone to lend a hand. We appreciate in advance your support of this important service event that both saves lives and helps provide scholarship money to our seniors towards their first year of college tuition!

SIGN UP FOR CONFERENCES!

The Academy strives to give students opportunities to reflect on their learning and progress in school. While they are supported by a team of peers and adults, it is ultimately the students that are responsible for setting goals for themselves, tracking their progress, and gathering and responding to feedback. Twice a year, at the end of the first and third quarter, students are responsible for reflecting on their learning and progress toward their goals through facilitating conferences in each discipline that include their parents or guardians, and teacher. These conferences will put students in a leadership role, rather than in a typical conference role of bystander, as they lead the discussion about their successes and areas for growth while responding to questions and feedback from the adult participants in the conversation.

We ask everyone to please sign up for a conference slot by Friday, October 19. We will then create a schedule for when you are here so that you have 15-minute sessions with each individual teacher during your conference period. We will do our best to stick to the agreed-upon schedule, but unforeseen circumstances sometimes require that people must remain a few minutes after their scheduled end time in order to meet.

Thank you. We look forward to seeing you all in person. Please remember that Thursday (11/1) is a half day for students and there is no school on Friday (11/2).

PARENT VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR STUDIO BLOCKS

We are seeking volunteer parent artists to donate their time to The Academy Studio Block program by teaching classes. Tuesday and/or Thursday morning availability is required, along with knowledge and experience in visual arts such as drawing, painting, mosaics, and print making, and knowledge of non-visual arts such as theater and creative writing. Please contact Neale Gay with questions or interest.

Classroom Close-ups

Academy Alum Jeannie Bartlett '10 visited the 12th grade Environmental Science class (pictured) and the 10th grade Biology class to discuss her work with Vermont dairy farmers to improve the water quality of Lake Champlain.
Spanish V students completed their projects on Jorge Luis Borges and showcased their dual talents (artistic and literary) by speaking knowledgeably and in fluid Spanish about the Argentine's theme of duality while sipping mate, the typical gaucho tea.
The 6th & 7th grade students went on an educational river cruise on the Connecticut River on Friday to supplement their study of watersheds and native cultures in their English, Geography, and Climate Connections courses.

The Cupcake Challenge - October 26

The Challenge: take a blank canvas (a plain cupcake) and create a masterpiece. Each team will be given plain cupcakes and a bag of mystery decorations. It’s up to you to create something special.

Cupcakes will be judged (and eaten) at the Halloween Dance. The winning team will be announced at Morning Meeting on Monday.

Teams participating in the Cupcake Challenge will stay at school until the dance begins. They will plan and decorate their cupcakes, then watch a movie (tbd). Bring your costumes for the dance and something for dinner. Only those registered by October 10th may stay through for the Cupcake Challenge and the movie. Contact Steph Powers for more information.

SPORTS RECAP, WEEK OF OCTOBER 1st

Cross-country runners had a great meet at Four Rivers on Wednesday. Avery M (4th), Paloma H-S (6th), and Katie T (28th) had a strong showing in field of 60 female runners. On the boys side, Will D (3rd) finished a mere 9 seconds behind the leader, while Eli C (32nd), David C (41st), Izzy S (56th), Rory S (58th), and Jeremy F (67th) rounded out the AaC boys' finishers, who placed 6th out of the 9 schools represented.

Girls Varsity soccer persevered through very wet weather conditions this week to play two competitive games against Putney and Four Rivers. Both resulted in 5-0 losses, but the team showed wonderful growth. 7th graders Tayanna L and Emmy P-C stepped up to play with the team, and all the girls put in tremendous effort and spirit in some terrible weather. Calla J, Ruby C, and Izzy B led the offensive attack, while Gwen H did a nice job in goal.

The Boys varsity defeated White Oak 7-3 on Thursday behind 4 goals from Harper W-W and 3 from Raymond M. Ishan S (2), Nat B-O, Harper, and Nick F all contributed assists, while the team as a whole displayed excellent passing. Nick C had a strong game on defense, and Nick H recorded a shot on goal as well.
