You may be aware that last week, President Trump issued a proclamation that prohibits certain Chinese graduate students and researchers with F-1 or J-1 visas from entering the country. The proclamation also mentions that visas may be revoked for students and researchers already in the United States.
Senior Vice Provost Feigenbaum and I sent a letter to international graduate students and researchers from China yesterday. We want to share this information with you, too, because these new rules will affect some of your valued colleagues, team members, and friends. If this affects you personally, we understand how stressful this news is and how the uncertainty about next steps makes the situation more difficult.
We are here to support you as you determine how this proclamation may impact you, your trainees, or research staff. We do not have clear instructions or guidelines from the federal government at this time, unfortunately. As soon as we do, we will share those with you immediately.
In light of the proclamation and current university travel restrictions, we are advising all current UT Chinese graduate students and researchers to refrain from traveling outside the United States at this time.
For further information, Q&As are posted on the Texas Global Stay Informed website. You may also reach out to Texas Global directly. The Texas Global advising team will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as soon as they become available.
Our international students and scholars are an important facet of the research enterprise, enriching our environment through their diverse perspectives and experiences. We value the international members of our community and continue to strive to support them through this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Sonia Feigenbaum, Ph.D. Alison Preston, Ph.D.
Sr. Vice Provost for Global Engagement Interim Vice President for Research
