We see the power of our students' voices each and every day, but it is always an extra honor when we get to highlight them at our annual Joy of Writing reading and potluck. This year, twelve students read their work to a packed room. As usual, the stories in this anthology are full of resilience, hope, humor, and heart. Literacy champion and founder of Literacy Volunteers of America (now ProLiteracy) Ruth Colvin passed away on August 18 at 107. Colvin is the founder of Literacy Volunteers, which eventually became ProLiteracy, our charter organization. In 1961, she read an article about the amount of people with low literacy in her area. It spurred her to change the world. As Robert McFadden put it in his NY Times article about her passing, "She had no experience teaching, but felt passionately that she had to do something about it."
We see Ruth Colvin in all of our tutors, and every day, we try to honor her legacy with the work that we do. To learn more about this extraordinary person, you can read ProLiteracy's article about her life here.

Literacy Volunteers is going back to class this fall! We are thrilled to announce that we will be offering eleven groups and classes starting this September. This includes both Zoom and in-person intermediate citizenship classes, a basic-English citizenship class, our advanced-level writing class, and the return to in-person basic-level conversation groups. As always, we continue to offer weekly intermediate-level Zoom conversation groups.
All of these courses, with the exception of Catherine's three intermediate citizenship classes, are led by volunteers! Having these small group classes allows students additional community-building opportunities. We are deeply grateful to our wonderful volunteers who provide this valuable service.

This year, we are proud to partner with Thomas Jefferson Adult Career Education (TJACE) and host a table at Cville Sabroso together. We will be highlighting our shared students and missions. Cville Sabroso, a Charlottesville tradition hosted by and benefitting Sin Barerras, will be held on Saturday, September 21 from 1-10 p.m. at the Ting Pavilion.
