| FoodWIse After School Engagement |
FoodWIse partnered with the Boys and Girls Club to provide a 5-week nutrition education series at Fort Howard Elementary Afterschool Program. FoodWIse used the curriculum Show Me Nutrition 5th Grade to provide education in eating various foods and colors using MyPlate. Show Me Nutrition supports grade-level math and communication arts expectations, as appropriate. Show Me Nutrition sequence teaches several important health themes, such as nutrition, food safety, physical activity, and how media may influence nutrition and body image.
The afterschool program concentrated on teaching objectives towards food safety, reading food labels, making healthier snack choices, and why we eat. The group was excited. We had a few visitors: Broccolini, Sir Carrot, Germy, and Cookie Monster all appeared and helped teach the lessons.
"Students have shared that they enjoy the program. Not only do they remember the foods they made, but they also remember specific lessons such as the 5 food groups," Teachers' comments regarding the FoodWIse program teaching objectives.
