Each November, the Friends of the Garden make a selection of wreaths, swags and table centrepieces for the Shop in the Garden. The volunteers use fresh material culled from their own gardens and the UBC Botanical Garden to make each item truly unique and special. Take home a handmade wreath between November 26 and December 7, while supplies last. You can also learn how to make your own wreath at our wreath making workshop Nov 29. Ornaments, Cards & Gift Ideas
The Shop in the Garden has a festive array of new ornaments for your tree. Come and check out our selection. In addition to a cupboard full of Christmas cards and calendars, The Shop has new cards and mini-calendars with local scenes from popular Vancouver artist, Hilary Morris. Treat yourself to a high quality rain poncho by Moojoes of North Vancouver and a fun scarf from Creative Dimensions to stay warm and dry throughout the season.Hostess Gifts
An Amaryllis bulb would be a fine hostess gift, perhaps selected from the Santa series - Blitzen, Cupid, Dancer and Rudolph. Or a well priced Delft ceramic bowl for indoor forcing a variety of prepared Crocus, Muscari, Narcissus, Tulipa and Hyacinth. There are Hyacinth on glass kits in assorted colours, a small gift for gardening friends. The Shop will be receiving potted poinsettias and paperwhites in the coming week.
Favourite Books for 2014
Sharon Hanna’s The Book of Kale and Friends was our most popular book in 2014. This sequel to her national bestseller, The Book of Kale, adds 13 equally easy to grow superfoods and more than 130 new recipes. Another favourite, Beatrix Potter’s Gardening Life, is a charming exploration of this beloved writer’s evolution as author-illustrator, gardener, and sheep farmer. Beautifully illustrated with photographs of her Hill Top Farm and her own sketches and watercolours, it shows how her passion for plants inspired her to write. The Garden of Evening Mists was our most popular novel, written by the acclaimed Malayan author, Tan Twan Eng. The central theme is a Japanese garden in Malaya to be created in memory of a sister. It is a haunting novel, beautifully written, poetic and melancholic, showing how our lives are affected by memory, forgetting and guilt. The new edition of The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Trees, illustrated by David More and written by research dendrologist John White, has been a perennial favourite since it was first published. It covers nearly 2,000 tree species and cultivars found in North America and Europe, and stands out from its competitors because of the extraordinary detail and beauty of the painted illustrations. Finally, Piet Oudolf’s newest book, Planting: a New Perspective, hailed as “a groundbreaking moment in horticulture”, has received a lot of attention at the Shop. It is the first of Oudolf’s books to explicitly show how his gardens and landscapes are made. A proponent of the naturalistic style and gardens of year-round interest, Oudolf designed the planting for the High Line in New York.
