Bridges Society E-Newsletter Winter 2018
United Way of the Capital Region | Bridges Society

Books, Bridges and Barnes & Noble

Approximately 50 volunteers and United Way of the Capital Region’s Bridges Society members recently spent three mornings chaperoning more than 60 third-grade children on field trips at Barnes & Noble book store in Camp Hill.

Each volunteer was paired with a Downey Elementary School student to complete a scavenger hunt and read with. Thanks to the generous support of Enterprise Rent-A-Car, the students were even able to pick out books to take home.

Reading proficiency by third grade is the most important predictor of high school graduation and career success. Yet every year, more than 80 percent of low-income children miss this crucial milestone. That’s why education is a priority area for United Way of the Capital Region. Bridges Society’s Literacy for Life field trips are just one way we are striving to help children succeed.
