Research News

From the Associate Dean of Research Alison Cuellar

As you may have heard NIH has announced a “Simplified Review Framework for NIH Research Project Grant Applications.” NIH expects that this new framework will have minimal impact on how applications are written. I’m not so sure. It is certainly the case that the proposal sections have not changed, at least not yet, but I urge you to read the new framework to consider how you convey to reviewers the key information that they need to score your proposal well. I have sat on numerous review committees and, ultimately, the scoring framework has a strong influence on the review. That means you as author should keep the scoring framework in mind and make it easy for reviewers to find the key information they need. I encourage you to visit this site, and review the NIH materials and recordings. The new framework goes live for application due dates of January 25, 2025 or later.
Mason Summer Team Impact Project Proposals. Mason is accepting proposals for Summer 2024 Team Impact Projects. These projects support multidisciplinary teams of undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty members. They are faculty-led projects that explore a central theme, a research question, or a community identified problem. Mason is particularly seeking proposals with a focus on Anti-Racist Community Engagement as defined by the Office of Community Engagement and Civic Learning, however, all proposals are welcome. The deadline for submissions is November 17, 2023. These projects will proceed in the summer of 2024 pending funding. For more information on this opportunity, go to go.gmu.edu/stip or contact Jesse Guessford jguessfo@gmu.edu.
