Newly Endowed Arts Initiative Brings Vibrant Vision to
Hebrew College

Recognizing the transformative power of art, Hebrew College recently established a new arts endowment to support our Arts Initiative. This dedicated funding stream will enable the Initiative’s leadership committee to continue expanding their reach, programming ambitious seasonal exhibits, and developing innovative educational initiatives. The committee, composed of artists, art collectors, and Jewish studies scholars, has curated a vibrant series of exhibitions that bring Jewish identity and values to life through diverse media. From thought-provoking contemporary pieces to historical works, each show is crafted to complement the college's curriculum and engage the community.

TAMID ADULT LEARNING TRAVEL

Civil Rights Journey through the American South

Twenty-eight Tamid adult learners traveled to Atlanta, Montgomery, Selma, and Birmingham over November 10-12 to learn about the civil rights struggles of the 1950s & 60s. The group visited sites and museums memorializing the movement for African American enfranchisement and equality, including MLK Jr's Ebenezer Baptist Church, the Edmund Pettus Bridge, and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. "Traveling with this diverse group of adults, offered a warm, thoughtful and supportive space to consider the history of the Civil Rights Movement," says Tamid Director Kim Bodemer, who traveled with the group. "We had the chance to dive into what it means to be in relationship with others, to hear and internalize stories, to notice the progress we’ve made and chart a course to continue the work to build a more just world.

Three obscure stories, all ‘texts of terror’ (Phyllis Trible’s term), punctuate the patriarchal and matriarchal narratives. They are known as the ‘wife-sister tales’: Abraham and Sarah (then named Abram and Sarai) in Egypt in Pharaoh’s court (Genesis 12:1-10); Abraham and Sarah in the House of Abimelech, the Philistine King of Gerar (20:1-18); and Isaac and Rebekah, again with Abimelech in Gerar (26:6-11; perhaps a different king by the same name). In each of these stories, the patriarch, seeing she is a beautiful woman, asks his wife to pose as his sister because he fears that he might be killed and she abducted.

Laure Garnick, Hebrew College Trustee

Laure Garnick's involvement in Hebrew College began as a Me'ah student and evolved over the into her current role as Secretary of our Board of Trustees. After stepping back from a successful career in corporate banking to raise her children, Laure devoted herself to volunteering in the Boston community. In addition to her invaluable work on Hebrew College's Board, she serves on JFNA’s National Women’s Philanthropy Board, and has served on the board of CJP and several other Jewish organizations. For her dedicated work and deep care for the Jewish future, Laure will receive the Kipnis-Wilson Friedland Award in January from the The Lions of Judah, an organization honoring particularly dynamic and effective Jewish woman philanthropists and global activists.
