Scranton City Pride 2022 a great success!
During the week of June 4-11, groups of volunteers throughout the City of Scranton conducted cleanups and plantings as part of Scranton City Pride 2022.
Organized jointly by NeighborWorks Northeastern Pennsylvania and Scranton Tomorrow, Scranton City Pride 2022 was supported by the City of Scranton and Mayor Paige Cognetti. Supporting partners included United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania; Scranton High School; the Lackawanna County Environmental Office; NET Credit Union; NeighborWorks America; The University of Scranton; and more!
As part of Scranton City Pride 2022, NeighborWorks board and staff members participated in a cleanup of a vacant lot at the corner of South Main Avenue and Hampton Street on Friday, June 11. We thank all participants and supporters who helped to make Scranton City Pride 2022 a great success!
NEPA Gives raises nearly $20,000
Held on Friday, June 3, NEPA Gives was another great success for our organization!
With the support of donors like you, we were able to raise nearly $20,000 over the 24-hour period. Our total for giving on June 3 placed us in eighth overall out of 212 participating organizations!
We set a career high this year with $19,648 raised by 119 individual donors, surpassing our campaign totals both last year and in 2020!
Your support through NEPA Gives helps us to sustain and grow our services in areas including homeownership counseling and financial coaching, Aging in Place services for seniors, neighborhood revitalization services, and more.  Thank you!
NeighborWorks receives Townie Award from the PA Downtown Center
Our team was recently honored to be the recipient of a 2022 Townie Award from the Pennsylvania Downtown Center! Awarded in the category of “Physical Improvements & Design: Program-Wide Façade Rehabilitation,” the award honors our Beautiful Blocks program, which provides matching funding support to groups of residents in Scranton and Carbondale to assist in making exterior improvements to their homes.
Since 2019, the Beautiful Blocks program has awarded more than $235,000 in funding to 37 groups of residents in Scranton and Carbondale. These funds have been matched with over $500,000 in matching funds from participating residents, resulting in the completion of more than 280 home improvement projects and a total investment of more than $750,000 into neighborhoods in both communities.
The Townie Award was presented during the Pennsylvania Downtown Center’s 2022 Townie Awards Gala Dinner, held earlier this week in Harrisburg as part of the organization’s annual conference. Todd Pousley, our Neighborhood Revitalization Manager, accepted the award on behalf of our organization. Joining Todd were staff members Gerard Hetman (Community Development Specialist, who manages the day-to-day operations of Beautiful Blocks) and Miranda Pace (West Scranton Neighborhood Coordinator). Also joining them was Wayne Evans, a NeighborWorks board member who originally developed the Beautiful Blocks program during his past service as Scranton Mayor.
Our team was also delighted to be joined at the conference by our colleagues from Scranton Tomorrow (Steve Ward) and United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania (Chrissy Manuel and Holly Yorkonis). Every day, we enjoy working with these partner organizations to make positive change happen in our community.
Cutting With Care launches with great fanfare
Our Aging in Place program is partnering with the Leadership Lackawanna Core Program Class of 2022 to launch the Cutting with Care initiative. This program will help connect area seniors who need a helping hand with lawn maintenance with volunteers throughout the summer. Applications are currently closed, but stay tuned for more updates in the future.

NeighborWorks welcomes two new staff
NeighborWorks is pleased to welcome two new faces to our staff in Miranda Pace and Alyssa Espinoza!
Miranda is our West Scranton Neighborhood Coordinator, where she will be managing various community development projects and programs as part of the implementation of the West Scranton Neighborhood Plan.
Alyssa will be joining the staff as an AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America) member for this summer. A West Scranton native and West Scranton High School alumnus, Alyssa will be helping with various activities and events throughout the summer. This past May, she graduated with a BA in Psychology and Sociology from Ohio University. She plans on continuing her career into the criminal justice system following her time of service.
Please join us in welcoming them to the team!
Aging in Place client highlight: Betty Tyler
Last year, Betty Tyler's home had no heat, an inaccessible panel box, frozen pipes, and needed electrical repairs.
A joint effort between the NeighborWorks Northeastern Pennsylvania Aging in Place Program, the Agency for Community EmPOWERment of NEPA, and The United Way of Lackawanna & Wayne Counties helped Betty return to a home that was now safe and livable for her -- just in time for the winter. Watch the video above to hear her story.
