Memorial Mission Moment: Janet Acosta's Story

In the spring of 2025, Janet Acosta’s life was forever changed when she was diagnosed with HER2-positive breast cancer – a more aggressive, fast-growing form of the disease. She and her family were devastated, especially as her father had just rung the bell at Memorial Radiation Oncology to signify the end of his own cancer battle.

Janet soon became deathly ill and had to be hospitalized after experiencing poor care at a different local oncology center. Her spirit was shattered. “I was at that point where I really thought I was going to pass away,” she recalled.

Heeding her father’s advice and recommendation about the compassionate care he experienced at Memorial Cancer Center, Janet sought a second opinion and transferred care to Memorial. The difference was night and day – and lifesaving.

“The program that Memorial Medical Center Oncology currently has here locally is outstanding. They have resources, they’re accredited, and they’ve helped two generations of my family,” Janet said. “They truly care. They truly care about the individual, they truly care about your treatment, and they become your family.”

Now feeling more like the old Janet, or, as one of her co-workers called her, “Wonder Woman,” Janet says she is embracing survivorship and very much looking forward to that special day when she gets to ring the bell.

How We're Making Communities Healthier:
Supporting Local Causes And Events

We are committed to meeting the unique needs of all those we serve, both inside and outside our hospital walls, and were thrilled to recently be able to support and attend so many important community functions.
  • Top left: Our MMC Team members again showed up strong at this year’s Run With Your Doc in historic Mesilla on March 28th by bringing the spirit, the support, and the community together in a big way. What an amazing sight to see so many runners and walkers united for something that truly matters. Thank you to everyone who participated and to our fellow sponsors for helping make this event a continued success in support of Amador Health Center.
  • Top right: From egg hunts to bounce house fun, Las Cruces came out in full force to celebrate Easter weekend at the annual SpringFest on April 4th. It was a thrill to see so many family members and friends making lasting memories — many of which were captured at the MMC-sponsored photo booth.
  • Middle left: The Champions for Children Gala hosted by Jardin de los Niños on March 28th was a beautiful reminder of the impact that comes from showing up for our youth and families. We were proud to be represented by our Women’s and Children’s Services, and Pediatric teams, whose dedication to caring for children and families reflects the heart of this mission.
  • Middle right: Read Across America Week in March was pure magic at University Hills Elementary thanks to volunteers like team members from our Transport Team. It was tremendous fun seeing the hallways and classrooms filled with students so excited about the power of reading.
  • Bottom left: MMC was proud to be part of the Community Baby Shower ¡Con Cariño! hosted by Aprendamos Family of Services on March 14th. It was great connecting with families, sharing resources, and celebrating our community. Events like this highlight the importance of coming together to support parents, children, and healthy futures.
  • Bottom right: We are proud to play an important role in championing the health, leadership, and advancement of professional women in our community. Through networking, education and community engagement, our partnership as an Empowerment Partner with The Association creates impactful spaces where women can connect, grow, and prioritize both personal and professional well-being.

Commemorating Donate Life Month

In 2025, a record 135 donor heroes in New Mexico saved 275 lives.

We recently welcomed Donate Life - New Mexico Donor Services to recognize National Donate Life Month by sharing information and raising a “Donate Life” flag to reaffirm our commitment to serving patients, saving lives and honoring donor heroes. At MMC, we are proud to support the Donate Life mission and raise awareness about the life-saving impact of registering as an organ donor.

Did you know that more than 100,000 men, women and children are currently waiting for a lifesaving transplant? Thirteen people die each day waiting for an organ transplant, and every 8 minutes another person is added to the national waiting list.
