SafetyWorks Week 2022 assists dozens of homeowners

Our SafetyWorks Week for Seniors event was a great success this month, with a week of hands-on on activities helping seniors across Lackawanna County from July 4-8. Since 2010, we have partnered with Group Mission Trips to provide free home repairs to homeowners in underserved communities through Lackawanna County. This year, over 46 different small home repair projects were completed for older adults (all clients of our Aging in Place program), with repairs including interior/exterior painting, porch repairs, wheelchair ramp construction, landscaping, and other minor repairs and improvements.
We are especially thankful to the volunteers from Group Mission Trips for offering their time and talents to assist older adults during this week. Over 300 volunteers were mobilized across 10 different states, with over 8,040 volunteer hours logged and over $225,000 worth of volunteer labor performed. Additionally, over 1,000 food items were donated to Friends of the Poor. Without their assistance, we could not achieve our goals of improving quality of life for our neighbors.
We look forward to hosting them again in summer 2023!

NeighborWorks receives grant from Regional Foundation

We were recently joined Kevin Dow, Executive Director of the Regional Foundation; Bob Durkin, Regional Foundation board member and President of The Greater Scranton Chamber Of Commerce; Eileen Cipriani, Executive Director of the City of Scranton Office of Community Development; U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright; local community partners including City, County, and State representatives; and other community stakeholders for an announcement of a $300,000 investment in our long-term neighborhood revitalization work in West Scranton!
This funding will support the implementation of our West Scranton Neighborhood Plan, which is aimed at improving the quality of life in West Side. There will be physical improvements made to homes, business corridors, parks, and vacant lots over the coming 10 years. There will also be community events, volunteer opportunities, resident leadership training, and committees to be involved in. A big thank you to our amazing partners and sponsors for making this happen!

HDC Mid-Atlantic expands into NEPA

Our NeighborWorks peer organization HDC MidAtlantic is expanding their footprint to help meet the need for affordable housing in Northeastern Pennsylvania by acquiring and helping to preserve five existing affordable housing communities in Luzerne and Lackawanna counties, totaling 153 apartments. HDC MidAtlantic is now managing and will soon step in as owner for the following communities: Saint Catherine Manor Apartments in Scranton, PA; Saint John Apartments in Wilkes-Barre, PA; Saint Vincent Apartments in Plymouth, PA; Saint Stanislaus Apartments in Nanticoke, PA; and Saint Thomas Court Apartments in Hazleton, PA. HDC MidAtlantic will offer on-site resident services to ensure residents can reach their full potential and thrive while living at an HDC MidAtlantic community.
We are excited to help introduce HDC MidAtlantic to the community and identify additional opportunities for them to assist in meeting the affordable housing needs right here in Northeastern PA. For more information about HDC MidAtlantic, check out HDC's website.

Extending warmest wishes to departing board members

The NeighborWorks Board and Staff recently celebrated the amazing legacies of three long serving board members whose terms ended in July. (From left) Sara Levy, Kurt Bauman, and Michele Bannon collectively contributed over 31 years of transformative service to the NeighborWorks board. Through their various roles as board officers, committee chairs and trusted voices, their leadership has been transformative for the organization over the past decade. They were each presented with a NeighborWorks Northeastern PA boomerang with the hope that they fly back our way to help again in the future! Thanks Sara, Kurt and Michele!
