In Conversation: SCOTUS Affirmative Action Decision
Recently, Dean Michael A. Simons shared a message about the U.S. Supreme Court opinion on affirmative action. You can read the full message online, but here’s an excerpt:

“At St. John’s Law, we are committed to supporting each of our students, recognizing the diverse ways in which their backgrounds and lived experiences can impact the learning experience. We are also committed to an educational environment in which all voices are heard, especially those that have too often been marginalized in the law and the legal profession. Today’s Supreme Court ruling does nothing to lessen those commitments.”

On 7/10, students and others in the Law School community gathered virtually for SCOTUS and Race-Conscious Admissions: A St. John’s Law Faculty Panel Discussion. Several faculty members discussed the U.S. Supreme Court's majority and separate opinions in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard College and the University of North Carolina. Following their remarks, the panelists took questions from the audience.

Many thanks to all who drove, chipped, and putted for a wonderful cause at the 10th Annual Hon. Theodore T. Jones, Jr. Golf Outing. Alumni and friends celebrated this year’s event honorees, Philip J. McManus '68C, '72L and Thomas J. Principe '69C, '73L, while raising funds for the Hon. Theodore T. Jones, Jr. ’72 Memorial Scholarship at St. John’s Law.

We’re also grateful for the alumni, faculty, administrators, and others who have given generously to our Bar Prep Meal Fund. With more than 50 meals to serve to the Class of 2023 at about $750 per meal, every gift has an immediate impact on the lives of our most recent graduates as the study for the bar exam at St. John’s Law. Scholarship in Print . . .
Professor Anna Arons has published “The Empty Promise of the Fourth Amendment in the Family Regulation System” in the Washington University Law Review.

Professor Noa Ben-Asher’s article, “Transforming Legal Sex,” will appear in the North Carolina Law Review (forthcoming 2024).

. . . and in the Field
Professor John Q. Barrett gave a lecture on Felix Frankfurter, Collector of People at a Touro Law School’s conference on The Life, Work & Legacy of Felix Frankfurter. You can watch the lecture online (First Session: 24:05 mark).

Professor Elaine Chiu spoke to numerous audiences at events celebrating Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Her keynote address at the Empowered Asian American Leadership program sponsored by the New York State Unified Court System’s Franklin H. Williams Judicial Commission focused on her recent study of attacks on Asian New Yorkers and her advocacy efforts on behalf of hate crime survivors.

Professor Abel Rodríguez presented his work at the Emerging Immigration Scholars Conference at George Washington University Law School. He discussed his research on lethal immigration enforcement, examining the racialized violence caused by migration control tactics throughout the United States.

Professor Rosemary Salomone presented an “intervention” as part of a Dialogue on Building Understanding through Multilingualism within the United Nations. The meeting included presentations by the president of the General Assembly and other senior leaders, followed by alternate interventions by representatives of member states, observer missions, UN entities, and civil society organizations as well as scientific experts to facilitate the interchange of ideas.
